Rutger published: Support Zach Wahls in His Bid for U.S. Senate from Iowa

There are numerous reasons to support and vote for Zach Wahls as the next United States Senator from Iowa. Zach is a remarkable young leader who has demonstrated his commitment to representing all Iowans with integrity and passion. His journey into public life has been marked by a strong dedication to fairness and equality, making him an ideal candidate who embodies the values of honesty and inclusivity.

I first encountered Zach during his early advocacy work, even before his political career officially began. While still a student, Zach courageously championed LGBTQ rights within the Boy Scouts of America, standing as a straight ally for inclusivity. His efforts brought about significant change and galvanized others to join the cause, showcasing his leadership and commitment to social justice. This is precisely why I believe in his ability to serve the people of Iowa with dedication and foresight. Zach's campaign is more than just an election; it's a movement towards a brighter future for all Iowans. His words, “We are building a movement of Iowans committed to improving our state’s future,” resonate deeply with those who seek progressive and inclusive leadership.

Zach Wahls has a proven track record of problem-solving and effective governance as a State Senator. As a sixth-generation Iowan, he has consistently prioritized the needs of middle-class and working families. In the state legislature, he has fought against powerful special interests that exploit Iowans, led initiatives to ban insider trading among politicians, and proposed sensible term limits. His bipartisan efforts have yielded tangible benefits for Iowa communities, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the people he serves.

As a new father, Zach deeply understands the realities facing Iowa families. His upbringing on Iowa’s family farms instilled in him the values of hard work and dedication. Whether it’s the rising costs faced by families at grocery stores, daycare centers, or hospitals, Zach has worked tirelessly to address these challenges. He has championed tax cuts for middle-class families, streamlined regulations, and expanded economic opportunities through investments in trade schools and educational institutions.

Many recall Zach’s rise to national prominence in 2011, when as a 19-year-old student, he eloquently defended the freedom to marry for all Iowans before the State Legislature, drawing from his experience growing up with two mothers. This moment of courage and advocacy showcased the essence of who Zach is—a leader who stands up for what is right, even when it is difficult. Throughout his career, Zach has continued to advocate for all Iowa families, drawing on his experiences and education from the University of Iowa and Princeton University.

Iowa needs a senator who not only understands its communities but also fights for working families over special interests. Zach Wahls embodies this ideal. He will bring a fresh perspective to the United States Senate, representing Iowans with vigor and by extension, the younger generation nationwide seeking representation and voice. His entire career has been about understanding people’s needs and fighting for them.

Zach is committed to protecting social security, Medicare, and Medicaid, ensuring that people who have earned these benefits receive them. He opposes Medicare and Medicaid cuts that threaten rural hospitals and will work to root out fraud and abuse without jeopardizing vital services. Zach believes in rewarding hard work and will fight to pass the PRO Act, facilitate unionization, and raise the federal minimum wage to $15.

Understanding the crucial role of Iowa’s farmers and rural communities, Zach aims to address the challenges they face from corporate consolidation and poor leadership. He will advocate for fair trade policies, break up agribusiness monopolies, and strengthen crop insurance. Zach supports investment in rural broadband and renewable energy, believing these are essential for the state’s future.

As a new parent, Zach is acutely aware of the financial pressures Iowa families face. He will fight for paid family and medical leave and champion public education funding. In response to severe abortion bans enacted by Republicans, Zach will strive to codify reproductive rights and protect access to crucial healthcare services.

Zach’s vision includes a secure immigration system and ethical governance, advocating for campaign finance reform and term limits. His support for the bipartisan Border Act of 2024 demonstrates his commitment to securing borders while maintaining humane policies.

For these reasons and more, I urge all Iowans to support Zach Wahls for United States Senate. His leadership promises to make Iowa and America a place of pride and progress for everyone.
