Recent research from The Williams Institute sheds light on a major issue facing transgender individuals: navigating public restrooms. This important study uncovers just how often transgender people encounter harassment and denial, especially when they're forced by regulations or expectations, not choice, to use restrooms that don't match their gender identity.>
In this extensive analysis, both transgender men and women shared their experiences over a year. What stood out was how much they continue facing in public restrooms. About 10% percent, or one in ten, transgender men reported being verbally harassed or denied access when trying out women's restrooms. Transgender women also wrestled with hurdles in men's restrooms: 7% were outright denied entry, and close to 9% were verbally harassed.>
It's revealing, yet not entirely surprising, that these risks don't disappear even when they use restrooms matching their gender identity. Around 5% percent transgender men faced barriers in men's restrooms, and 7% dealt with verbal harassment. Transgender women? When in women's restrooms, 5% were denied entry, and over 7% faced verbal attacks.>
This all comes from an extensive 2022 U.S. Transgender Survey, collecting insights from over 92,000 voices, offering us a deep dive and better understanding. >
Despite mounting evidence about these increased risks with bathroom bans, some political figures, including former President Donald Trump, have backed restrictions that prevent transgender people from using restrooms matching their gender identity. They often argue it's about "protecting women," but there's no solid evidence supporting this claim.>
Trump's administration initially laid down an executive order restricting restroom access in this context, under a pretext that it protected women. But does including transgender people in gendered spaces really threaten women's safety? The data says otherwise.>
Backing up this study, research in places like Massachusetts, where nondiscrimination laws are in place, shows no increase in incidents like assaults or voyeurism after policies were enacted. This emphasizes how rare these concerns are.>
Moreover, a 2018 Williams Institute study showed states with gender nondiscrimination laws didn't see any jump in restroom-related offenses compared with those without such rules.>
Beyond just numbers, it's about people's lives affected by these issues. Take Nex Benedict, a nonbinary Indigenous teen from Oklahoma, who suffered a tragic ending after being assaulted in a school restroom. It's stories like these that reveal how real and often violent these experiences remain.>
The research by The Williams Institute drives home how urgently we need policies protecting transgender folks while fostering inclusivity. The belief that transgender individuals using restrooms according to their gender identity are a threat clashes with consistent reports showing they're actually on the receiving end of harassment and violence in public.>
Safe spaces are vital—it's about ensuring transgender and nonbinary individuals can live with dignity and peace. Our focus should shift towards empathy and understanding, acknowledging everyday challenges like restroom access they face.>
