I have spent the last week reflecting on the intense challenges facing transgender individuals, especially in light of recent political developments. A trip to Las Vegas for the Creating Change Conference offered a brief respite, but the harsh reality remains: the current political climate is increasingly hostile to people like me.
Last Monday, I witnessed an inaugural address that seemed designed to marginalize communities like mine. The rhetoric was harsh and dismissive, targeting many, including transgender individuals. Yet, amidst the fear and uncertainty, I find solace and strength in my passion for sports.
Three times a week, I immerse myself in the world of football, playing for the Connecticut Ambush in the Women's Football Alliance. It's a team where I've found camaraderie and support, a place where I can momentarily set aside the anxieties of the outside world. The physical exertion and teamwork offer a therapeutic escape, allowing me to focus on the present moment.
When I'm not on the field or writing about sports, I work as an operator for Trans Lifeline. My role involves listening to voices filled with desperation, navigating through moments of despair. This experience has only reinforced how crucial it is to have spaces like sports where I can find peace and a sense of belonging.
I am incredibly grateful for the support of my team’s owner, Colleen Vacirca, and my teammates who stand by me both on and off the field. Their unwavering support is a testament to the power of community and shared goals. Sports have been a part of my life since I was young, and they continue to be a source of empowerment and self-care.
As a transgender American in 2025, I am acutely aware of the challenges facing our community. I worry for friends whose children face harassment at school, simply for being who they are. I think of those serving in the military, now facing uncertainty about their future in service due to discriminatory policies.
The aggression directed at the transgender community is palpable, often manifesting in violent and dehumanizing rhetoric. It is disheartening to see such hostility, particularly from influential figures and institutions. Yet, despite this, I draw inspiration from fellow transgender athletes like Sadie Schreiner, who face adversity with courage and grace.
Sadie, a talented sprinter from the Rochester Institute of Technology, has faced her share of transphobia. Yet, she remains undeterred, finding strength in her love for track and field. Her resilience is a beacon for many, including myself, as we navigate these challenging times.
At the recent Creating Change Conference, I was inspired by the collective resolve of transgender advocates and allies. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of visibility and speaking out. Chris Mosier, a trailblazer in the world of sports, encouraged me to use my voice more actively. I intend to do just that, sharing stories and celebrating the achievements of LGBTQ athletes.
As someone who has been embraced by multiple sports teams throughout my transition, I am determined to challenge the misconceptions about transgender athletes. The notion that we are a threat to women's sports is both false and harmful. True support for women's sports involves celebrating diversity and fostering inclusivity.
I am committed to standing up for my community, both on and off the field. My journey as a transgender athlete is one of resilience and determination, a testament to the power of sports as a unifying force. To all who support and uplift me: thank you. Together, we will continue to shine brightly, overcoming the barriers before us.
This is what being a transgender American means to me in 2025, and I will continue to fight for my right to live authentically and pursue my passions.
