Standing Firm: The Imperative of Allyship with the Trans Community

Being an ally to the transgender community is a non-negotiable commitment for me, and it should be the same for any candidate seeking public office. My support does not waver with the political climate, polls, or focus groups. In times when trans individuals, particularly trans youth of color, are facing systemic attacks, it is crucial that elected representatives and aspiring candidates do more than offer tacit support. They must take a bold and visible stance.

Learning from History

History teaches us how persecution begins. The tactic of targeting the most vulnerable members of society and blaming them for broader societal issues is not new. It is a method used not because the marginalized are responsible for these problems, but because it is easier to blame them than those in power. During the Nazi regime, Jewish people were the primary targets, but not the only ones. The LGBTQ community, those with disabilities, Romani people, and political dissidents also suffered. Among the first acts of fascist repression was the destruction of the Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin, a groundbreaking center for gender-affirming care and LGBTQ research. This was a precursor to the broader persecution that followed.

Current Legislative Challenges

Today, influenced by divisive political rhetoric, Congress passed a bill, HR 3492, which criminalizes healthcare professionals providing gender-affirming care. Spearheaded by high-profile figures, this legislation prioritizes political gain over genuine health outcomes. This care, which also benefits many cisgender individuals through treatments like hormone replacement therapy, is vital. Even when such bills do not become law, they inflict damage by creating an atmosphere of fear, legal uncertainty, and instability among the very services that marginalized communities rely on.

In Washington D.C., organizations such as Planned Parenthood and Whitman-Walker Health are essential to many communities, offering gender-affirming care alongside their primary and specialized healthcare services. When healthcare becomes politicized, people do not wait for judicial decisions to be made. They delay necessary care, ration medications, or withdraw from the healthcare system altogether.

The Role of Healthcare Providers

As a healthcare professional, I understand the critical nature of continuous care. These medications and treatments are life-saving. Criminalizing healthcare is irresponsible and dangerous. It does not safeguard children or families; rather, it endangers lives.

The Misdirection of Political Discourse

Despite these significant issues, political discourse has been diverted towards unfounded panic about trans women in sports. Let me be clear: trans women have every right to compete and be protected, just like anyone else. Athletics has always included individuals with diverse bodies, abilities, and strengths. Competitors will naturally face others who may be stronger or faster—that is not a crisis, but the essence of competition.

Sports should embody fairness, mutual respect, and the spirit of competition—not exclusion or suspicion. We must reject efforts to politicize children’s bodies, particularly trans youth, who are often targeted as a political distraction. Families and medical professionals should be the authorities on sex and gender identity.

Political Responsibility

While these narratives have been amplified by certain political factions, it is disappointing that some opposing voices have not challenged them more forcefully. It is imperative to resist every move that seeks to dehumanize individuals for political leverage.

Transgender people have always been integral members of our communities and society. Protecting the most vulnerable is not a radical notion; it is foundational to a just and equitable society. My dedication to this principle is unwavering, and I am proud to have a trans-led political team. We need to encourage more allies in leadership roles to advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. We must make it clear to those who attempt to marginalize us that an attack on any one of us is an attack on us all. We cannot allow media outlets and online provocateurs to shape a narrative that deters us from standing up for the rights of all individuals.

Anything less is not leadership, and it is not acceptable.
