Rutger published: St. Petersburg Shines Bright with Spectacular Rainbow Laser Display

The city of St. Petersburg, Florida, has once again demonstrated its support for the LGBTQ+ community by finding innovative ways to commemorate and celebrate diversity and inclusion. Amid ongoing challenges initiated by state policies, St. Petersburg continues to stand as a beacon of hope and resilience.

Recently, the city lit up the night sky with a stunning rainbow laser display as part of the Winter Pride St. Pete celebration. The dazzling show, visible from over 60 miles away, served as a powerful statement against the removal of the beloved rainbow crosswalks, which had become an emblem of pride and community in St. Petersburg.

A Remarkable Moment of Pride

The executive director of Winter Pride St. Pete, Rob Hall, described the event as "a remarkable moment." The light show was intentionally designed as a response to the efforts to erase LGBTQ+ symbols and history from the public space. Hall recounted his experience of visiting St. Petersburg and seeing the rainbow crosswalk for the first time, describing it as a "life-changing" moment. The crosswalk, however, was removed by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) as part of a broader state mandate.

"When it was removed, it had a significant impact on my heart," Hall shared, reflecting on the personal and communal significance of the crosswalk. The rainbow laser display became a way to reclaim that lost symbol and reassert the community's presence and values.

A Creative Response to State Policies

The rainbow laser display was crafted by the talented laser artist, Yvette Mattern. She expressed her pride in creating the display, especially in the location where the rainbow crosswalk was originally situated. Her work offered a temporary, yet powerful, reclamation of space and identity.

The removal of rainbow crosswalks in Florida has been part of a larger push by the state administration to eliminate what they consider distractions from roadways. Despite protests and opposition from local leaders and communities, the DeSantis administration has enforced policies that effectively ban pavement art and murals, including those celebrating Pride.

Standing Firm on Local Values

St. Petersburg officials complied with the state's directive to remove the crosswalks, under threat of losing important state funding. However, the city's leaders, including Mayor Welch, have been vocal about their commitment to defending equality and inclusion. In a press conference, Mayor Welch criticized the state's order as an attempt "to usurp local values and priorities and instead mandate what our values should be."

"We’ve seen the attempts to stifle our ability to express and celebrate our community values," Mayor Welch stated. "Yet time and time again, our community has risen to the occasion. And this latest challenge will be no exception."

Building a Resilient Community

The spirit of resilience and unity was echoed in a message from the city’s official social media account, which declared that the removed murals, including one affirming that Black History Matters, "reflect the soul of our community." The message continued, "This is our city, our voice, and our story… Together, we’ll continue building a community that is resilient, inclusive, and united."

The rainbow laser show was not the first act of community solidarity since the crosswalk's removal. In December, St. Petersburg unveiled 11 Pride-themed bike racks, further demonstrating its commitment to inclusion. Mayor Welch described the bike racks as "a vibrant way to honor the Pride street murals that were removed earlier this year due to state requirements."

As St. Petersburg continues to find creative ways to celebrate its diverse community, these efforts serve as a reminder of the importance of standing together in times of adversity. The city’s commitment to equality and expression highlights the enduring power of community pride and resilience.
