Rutger published: Sri Lanka's Inclusive Tourism Effort Faces Backlash from Religious Leaders

Back in September, Sri Lanka's tourism agency made a daring move by supporting a proposal from EQUAL GRAND, a well-known LGBTQ+ advocacy group. The idea was simple yet ambitious: turn Sri Lanka Into a "safe and welcoming" spot For LGBTQ+ travelers. They figured this could give a much-needed boost To their economy by attracting international tourists. Since 2019, Sri Lanka's been through a rough patch, dealing with crushing foreign debt, big budget deficits, and food shortages. Things hit a boiling point in 2022 when massive protests broke out, and people even set fire To The prime minister's official residence.

Political and economic backdrop

In this tough economic climate, The 2024 election welcomed a forward-thinking leader, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. One Of his top priorities has been finding new ways To generate revenue. That's where this tourism initiative, developed with EQUAL GRAND, came in—offering hope Of bringing essential foreign currency Into Sri Lanka.

However, not everyone was on board. The proposal quickly met with stiff opposition from religious leaders, sparking a big backlash. Just last week, The campaign was pulled, as a senior government official confirmed there wasn't enough support For promoting Sri Lanka as an LGBTQ+ travel destination.

Pushback from religious groups

Religious leaders across The country were vocal in their disapproval, worried about preserving cultural and moral values. Influential Buddhist monks and Catholic Church figures criticized The government For supporting what they saw as "new and unacceptable cultural practices." Groups like Cultura Vitae accused The government Of encouraging a "sodomite lifestyle" and trying To "normalize deviance."

In Their letter To President Dissanayake, four Buddhist priests argued that The tourism proposal clashed with Sri Lankan and Buddhist traditions. Although Sri Lanka often attracts European tourists, it ranks low in South Asia when it comes To LGBTQ+ rights. Homosexuality remains criminalized, carrying penalties Of up To 10 years in prison, and there are no legal protections against discrimination in housing or employment.

Is change on The horizon?

There's been a slow, but noticeable, shift toward decriminalizing homosexuality within Sri Lanka's government, drawing international backing, including support from The UN human rights chief. EQUAL GRAND's initiative aligned with these possible legislative changes, aiming To create a more inclusive society.

A recent survey pointed out that 12% Of Sri Lankans aged 18-65 identify as LGBTQ+, highlighting a significant community within The nation. After The campaign's cancellation, Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe remarked on The cultural sensitivities, saying, "People in Sri Lanka are still uncomfortable speaking on this topic. It's a cultural issue. It's not Europe, it Is still Asia."

Nuwan Mellawa, a leading LGBTQ+ advocate, made an important point: "No faith teaches cruelty. Leaders should protect, not endanger, vulnerable communities."

As Sri Lanka navigates its complex socio-political scene, The dialogue around LGBTQ+ rights continues To be a critical conversation. While The tourism campaign has ended, The discussions it sparked might pave The Way For future changes and reforms, leading To greater inclusivity and acceptance in The country.
