Rutger published: Squid Game Actor Park Sung-hoon Strives for Authentic Representation of Trans Character

Squid Game, the sensational survival thriller series, is set to return with its highly anticipated second season. Among the new characters introduced is Hyun-ju, also known as Player 120, portrayed by Park Sung-hoon. In a recent interview, Park discussed the importance of portraying his character with authenticity and respect.

The Challenge of Authentic Representation

Park Sung-hoon, a cisgender male actor, took on the role of Hyun-ju, a transgender woman, which sparked discussions among fans regarding casting choices. The decision to cast a cis male actor in a trans role was explained by the show's creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, who noted the challenges of casting a transgender woman in South Korea.

Park, reflecting on his involvement, shared insights into his approach to the character. Growing up with sisters, he developed an understanding of femininity, which he believes the director recognized in him. This connection was further cemented by his performance in the 2021 drama Hee-soo, where he portrayed a grieving father.

Delicate Portrayal and Consultation

Determined to avoid caricature, Park approached the role with sensitivity and attention to detail. “I was a bit surprised by how the director saw that side of Hyun-ju in me from the role,” he said. Park emphasized the importance of consulting with members of the transgender community to ensure an accurate and respectful representation, stating, “I never wanted to overdo the voice or exaggerate my gestures.”

The actor's natural voice is quite deep, and he felt that altering it significantly would detract from the emotional authenticity of the character. This approach was supported by the director, who agreed with Park on maintaining a natural portrayal.

Collaboration in Character Design

Hyun-ju’s appearance in the series was a collaborative effort, with Park contributing his own ideas, including the character’s distinctive short bangs. This collaborative process allowed for a more organic development of Hyun-ju’s identity, aligning with the actor’s commitment to authenticity.

Acknowledging Past Mistakes

In addition to discussing his role, Park addressed a controversy involving a social media post. The actor had previously shared a parody adult video related to Squid Game on Instagram, for which he later issued an apology. “A mistake is a mistake but I still believe it was wrong," he stated. "I think the first thing I need to do is take responsibility and endure the consequences.”

Park expressed a desire for audiences to engage with the series with compassion and understanding. He acknowledged the criticism directed at him, asserting that he would accept it fully while hoping viewers would appreciate the work with an open heart.

As Squid Game prepares to captivate audiences once again, Park Sung-hoon’s portrayal of Hyun-ju stands as a testament to the importance of thoughtful and respectful representation in media. His commitment to authenticity and continuous dialogue with the LGBTQ+ community highlights a growing awareness and sensitivity towards diverse narratives in entertainment.
