Soccer Star Sam Kerr Testifies About Frightening Taxi Experience in London
Internationally renowned soccer player Sam Kerr recently took the stand at Kingston Crown Court in London, where she is facing charges of racially aggravated harassment. The Chelsea striker detailed a frightening taxi ride she shared with her girlfriend, fellow soccer star Kristie Mewis, that took place nearly two years ago.
Kerr recounted the events of the early hours of January 30, 2023, when she and Mewis, having attended a friend’s birthday party, were attempting to return home. After several unsuccessful attempts to order an Uber, the couple hailed one of London’s iconic black cabs. What was supposed to be a routine journey quickly turned into a distressing ordeal, as Kerr explained to the court.
According to Kerr, she began to feel unwell during the ride and placed her head outside the passenger window to relieve her nausea. It was at this point that the taxi driver unexpectedly rolled up the window and began driving erratically for approximately 15 to 20 minutes, inducing panic in both Kerr and Mewis.
"I was terrified for my life," Kerr told the jury. "We were not in control of the situation... the driver’s erratic behavior made us feel unsafe, and we had no way of knowing where we were being taken." She emphasized that the inability to track the cab's route added to their sense of vulnerability.
The situation escalated when the taxi driver brought the couple to Twickenham police station, alleging they had caused damage to his vehicle. It was here that the incident with police constable Stephen Lovell occurred. Kerr is accused of racially abusing Lovell during the interaction, a charge she disputes.
The Australian women’s soccer team captain, who has Indian heritage, acknowledged calling Lovell "stupid and white" but argues that her words were not racially motivated. Her defense team, led by lawyer Grace Forbes, argues that the comment was a critique of perceived power dynamics and privilege rather than a racial insult.
"I felt like I was being treated differently because of my perceived race," Kerr stated, expressing her belief that the officers sided with the taxi driver without giving her account due consideration.
Beyond the courtroom drama, Kerr and Mewis have made headlines for happier reasons. In November 2023, the couple announced their engagement, with Mewis subsequently joining Chelsea’s rival team West Ham. Additionally, the couple is expecting their first child, a boy, in May. Kerr shared these personal updates during her testimony, highlighting the support they’ve received from the women’s sports community in contrast to the homophobic remarks they’ve faced online.
A moment of levity during the trial came when Kerr was asked to recount how she and Mewis first met. Kerr, with a smile, revealed that Mewis "slid into my DMs," prompting laughter from the courtroom audience. This moment provided a brief respite from the serious nature of the trial.
The trial, closely watched by media and fans alike, has shone a light on issues of race, safety, and the treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals. Kerr’s case, as yet unresolved, continues to unfold, and the final verdict remains to be seen.
The proceedings are ongoing, and Kerr’s defense remains steadfast in its argument that her comments were a reaction to an imbalance of power and the distressing circumstances she and Mewis found themselves in. Both the soccer world and the broader community are following the case closely, eager to see how it resolves.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as the trial continues.
