The LGBTQ+ Community's Celebration in a Small North Carolina Town Faces Challenges
The LGBTQ+ community in Newton, North Carolina, a small town with a population of about 13,000, is dealing with unexpected controversy surrounding their Pride celebration. Originally planned as a "takeover" event, the initiative faced backlash and misunderstandings among some residents and officials.
The event, branded initially as "Newton Pride Takeover 2025," was announced on social media two weeks ago. Organizers had scheduled a variety of activities, including a small festival, a drag show, a networking event, and a "queer karaoke" night. All activities were to be held on private properties, aiming to create a safe and celebratory space for the community.
Unexpected Backlash Following Social Media Post
However, tensions rose when Jon McClure, a member of the Newton City Council, posted a video on social media expressing anti-trans sentiments. His message, stating opposition to public displays of LGBTQ+ identities, garnered significant attention and elicited a wave of hostile comments from local residents. MacGregor VanBeurden, a leader with the LGBTQ+ Democrats of Catawba County and an organizer of the event, reported that McClure’s comments emboldened negative sentiments within the community, leading to businesses withdrawing their support.
"It got really nasty," VanBeurden explained. "We received a lot of hateful comments, and it escalated quickly. Some businesses started pulling out from the event, fearing backlash."
One particular comment on social media accused the organizers of planning a "Hostile Democratic Takeover," reflecting the misunderstandings and fear some locals felt about the event.
Rebranding the Celebration
In response to the escalating situation, and in an attempt to salvage the event, the organizers decided to rename the celebration from "Pride Takeover" to "Newton Rainbow Celebration." This strategic change was intended to ease tensions and restore confidence among local businesses and the broader community.
The rebranding appeared to have a positive impact. Many businesses that had initially withdrawn, such as Emporium 23, agreed to rejoin the festivities. VanBeurden noted that the name change helped alleviate some concerns among business owners.
Community and Leadership Response
Council member Jon McClure, while not directly apologizing, acknowledged the organizers' decision, stating his appreciation for the name change. "I commend you for the name change and for recognizing that there is a better location for this event," he wrote to the LGBTQ+ Democrats.
VanBeurden, in a message to supporters, highlighted the importance of confronting the prejudice revealed by the incident. "I hope this brings to light the deep-rooted hatred that exists within Newton against our LGBTQ+ community," he wrote. He urged community members to attend the upcoming Newton City Council meeting to voice their concerns and stand against such prejudice.
Newton Mayor Jerry Hodge emphasized that McClure's comments did not represent the entire council. "One council member does not speak for the entire council," the mayor stated, assuring that the upcoming meeting would be conducted with respect and dignity.
The Future of Pride in Small Towns
Reflecting on the situation, VanBeurden emphasized the need for visibility and representation everywhere, not just in large cities. "We exist in the middle of nowhere. We exist everywhere," he stated, reinforcing the presence and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community in smaller towns.
Despite the name change and the rejoining of some businesses, not all support has been regained. The local bar, Pour Choices, decided not to participate in the new "Rainbow Celebration."
The situation in Newton highlights the challenges that LGBTQ+ communities can face in smaller, more conservative areas. However, the rebranding of the event and the continued support from many local businesses and citizens showcase the community's resilience and dedication to creating inclusive spaces for all.
