In a major push advocating transgender rights, police detained six people following a protest at Glasgow's Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) offices. The demonstration was organized by Trans Kids Deserve Better, an activist group that's no stranger when it comes getting its voice heard at places like Department For Education and NHS offices.
On May 26, protestors took their fight right where it can't be ignored - they gathered at Glasgow's EHRC office on West George Street. Some bold activists actually managed their ways onto a balcony and put up a banner that read "End Segregation, Trans Liberation!" This gutsy move came as a direct challenge following recent legal rulings that threaten transgender rights, especially concerning access single-sex spaces.
Just half an hour after everything kicked off, two police cars and a van rolled onto scene. Officers eventually made their up balcony through a window and by midday, started taking protestors down. Supporters outside didn't let them go quietly - chanting, "Let them go!" trying prevent van from driving off. Things even got heated enough one person wedged themselves under van stop it moving.
What set off this protest? The UK Supreme Court recently interpreted 2010 Equality Act define ‘sex' purely on biological terms - a move that stripped away some legal protections from transgender folks. Then, EHRC backed it up by suggesting access single-sex spaces should hinge biological sex. Activists are seeing red over this, arguing it unfairly bars transgender women from female toilets and sometimes even male facilities. Transgender men are also finding doors slammed in their faces.
Trans Kids Deserve Better didn't hold back expressing their frustration on their website. "We're disappointed we have go such lengths just be heard, but we won't stop fighting while we're ignored and oppressed," one activist said.
Another activist voiced a raw, emotional plea: "I won't let courtrooms or any government dictate my gender identity or which bathroom I use! We should be studying exams, not FIGHTING FOR OUR LIVES! We deserve life; give us one!”
Supporters described what went down. One protester, Moan, relayed how police cordoned off building and forcibly removed activists from balcony. “They went inside and violently dragged those occupying offices from balcony. After dumping protesters in van, two more people tried intervene,” Moan said.
Reports say when one person tried stopping van by slipping under it, things turned physical, allegedly leading girl being hit and thrown down by police. Another protester named James criticized police handling, pointing out how differently another far-right protest same weekend was dealt with.
"When we showed officers photo someone doing Nazi salute, one policeman said, ‘I don't have my glasses,'” James recalled, clearly incredulous.
Police Scotland confirmed arresting five people aged 17 32 at protest. They'll be reported Procurator Fiscal. A 25-year-old man was also arrested related alleged assault and set appear Glasgow Sheriff Court. Thankfully, no injuries while streets reopened after protest wrapped up. This demonstration marks another chapter ongoing battle trans rights and wider fight against discriminatory practices policies.
