Silver Spring buzzed with energy as its annual Pride in The Plaza took center stage, drawing folks from all over. This past Sunday was all about celebrating our LGBTQ+ community and their incredible resilience. It was a day that truly embodied what makes this community so special: unity and acceptance.
"Today celebrates inclusion. It builds resilience and spreads love," said Robyn Woods, Live In Your Truth's program and outreach director, about organizing this vibrant event. It was her first time at it, and you could tell she was moved by all that love and support everyone brought with them.
"It warms my heart seeing families, kids, even grandparents here," she noted. "And all these allies showing up? It means so much. It's not just about us—it's about everyone. Watching everyone smile and lift each other up? Pure joy," she added.
The event was bursting with activities, from a Family Fun Zone and a chilled-out Pride Cool Down Lounge, right through live drag shows. There really was something there that kept everyone entertained and engaged all day long.
The plaza was full and buzzing with booths from groups like FreeState Justice, Washington Spirit, Trans Maryland, Moco Pride Center, and Heartwood Program. They were all there ready with resources, support, therapy, education—everything that speaks directly and meaningfully with our LGBTQ+ community.
"We want folks learning about our services," said Jessica Simon, a psychotherapist with Heartwood Program's Gender Wellness Clinic. Being at an event like this, surrounded by people who are eager and ready gives a real lift," she observed. Simon pointed out how vital celebrating Pride remains, especially in today's climate, calling it an "antidote against shame."
Siena Iacuvazzi from Maryland Trans Unity shared similar thoughts. "LGBTQI people are often demonized," Iacuvazzi said. "Pride plays an essential role in our healing process." She opened up about her own experience, sharing how finding her tribe changed everything.
"I was taught self-hate, convinced I was contrary,” she revealed. “But this community taught me there are others who've walked this road and are doing amazing things, flourishing because they embrace their truth and humanity."
"Pride fosters mutual understanding," Iacuvazzi continued. "It creates a sense that you belong—you're not alone on this journey. We're all on unique paths, respecting each other's experiences."
Robyn Woods hopes folks left feeling like family, filled with fun, resilience, but most importantly, pride. "Being proud, understanding representation's value and its significance—it's absolutely vital," she elaborated. "Young people here get a chance—they see themselves in thriving lesbian, gay, bisexual, and pansexual individuals, breaking through negative media portrayals with love and care."
Silver Spring's Pride in The Plaza radiates diversity and strength—a warm gathering where people come together like one big family. It's a space where joy's shared, stories resound, and hope grows toward brighter tomorrows.
Each year it reminds us about community power and why Pride matters so much. As Woods beautifully summarized, "This isn't just a celebration; it's a deep reflection on our shared resilience and our right simply and fully, just being."
