“It’s Shy’s last season playing college basketball, so I obviously have to go watch her play in the Sweet Sixteen,” Masonius expressed in her video, capturing the emotions of a final collegiate season and the pride of witnessing Sellers’ achievements firsthand.
Love and Basketball
Masonius, who played four seasons at Maryland before transferring to Seton Hall for her final year of eligibility, met Sellers during her time with the Terrapins. In an essay for her university, she shared her journey of self-discovery and acceptance, shedding light on her path to living authentically. “I’m part of the LGBTQ+ community, and June embodies a collective celebration of diversity, love, and self-acceptance,” Sellers wrote, highlighting the significance of Pride Month in her life.
Reflecting on her past, Sellers recounted the challenges of coming out, particularly as a student-athlete. “I felt I was different in middle school but tried to push it aside. I tried convincing myself that nothing was wrong and ignored all the signs. I was afraid to come out when I realized I wasn’t attracted to boys, fearing the negative attention it would bring me,” she shared.
Her bravery in embracing her true self is an inspiration to many, particularly within the realm of collegiate sports where representation is crucial. “I am proud of who I am, of my community and of being part of a movement that strives for a world where everyone can live their truth with pride. Representation, especially in collegiate sports, means a lot to me. There are different people, and you don’t have to be exactly like everybody else.”
On the Court and Beyond
Sellers’ impact extends beyond her role as a key player for the Maryland Terrapins. Known for her leadership and talent, she is the first Maryland player to achieve 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, and 500 assists. Her coach, Brenda Frese, regards her as the “bread and butter” of the team, underscoring her influence both on and off the court.
As the Terrapins aim to upset the top-seeded South Carolina, Sellers remains focused on her game, drawing strength from the support of Masonius and the broader sports community. She is one of three out LGBTQ players competing in the Sweet Sixteen, joining South Carolina’s MiLaysia Fulwiley and TCU’s Sedona Prince in representing LGBTQ athletes on a national stage.
