Rutger published: Shangela Addresses Sexual Assault Allegation and Ongoing Legal Challenge

Drag Race sensation Shangela, whose real name is Darius Jeremy ("DJ") Pierce, is once again publicly defending himself against a fresh allegation of sexual assault. This comes after a previous lawsuit, filed in 2023, was settled earlier this year.

On Monday, February 24, Eric Poff, known for his appearance on Vanjie: 24 Hours of Love and performing under the pseudonym Dakota Payne, filed a civil lawsuit against Pierce in the New York Supreme Court. The case, reported by various news outlets, has brought renewed attention to the drag performer.

Poff alleges that Pierce sexually assaulted him in October 2017 during the filming of the movie Hurricane Bianca 2. Working as a production assistant at the time, Poff claims he went out for drinks with Pierce in New York City, where they were working on the film. According to Poff, his drink was tampered with, causing him to black out. Upon regaining consciousness, he accuses Pierce and another unidentified man of sexually assaulting him in Pierce's hotel room.

Despite these serious accusations, Pierce has consistently denied any wrongdoing. On Tuesday, February 25, Pierce took to Instagram to address his fans and followers, calling the lawsuit "BS" and asserting that he is being falsely accused.

"Being falsely accused in the most heinous ways is very difficult to endure," Pierce wrote in his post. "I’m advised to stay silent, and I’m doing my best to continue on without engaging in a back and forth with dishonest people seeking money or a moment. ‘It’s not worth it,’ I tell myself."

He continued, "Even though NONE of these false claims have ever prevailed against me… My career, my character and even my family have suffered." Pierce highlighted that he believes the accusations to be an attempt to tarnish the image of a "successful Black, gay drag queen," but affirmed his commitment to fighting back with truth and patience.

In 2023, Pierce faced another legal challenge when Daniel McGarrigle, a former production assistant, accused him of rape in a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court. Pierce denied these allegations, and the case was eventually dropped in January 2024 after both parties reached a settlement in February.

Furthermore, a 2024 investigation by a major publication revealed five additional allegations of sexual assault linked to Pierce, spanning from 2012 to 2018. Pierce has categorically denied all accusations.

The ongoing legal battles have undoubtedly impacted Pierce's personal and professional life. Many of his fans and colleagues in the LGBTQ+ community are following the developments closely, eager to support him while awaiting further information.
