Rutger published: Search for Suspects in Repeated Attacks on Transgender Store Owner

Investigating attacks against a transgender shop owner in Los Angeles

The LAPD has ramped up its search efforts after a string and brutal robberies targeting Sabrina de la Peña, a 61-year-old transgender shop owner. Since April, she's been violently attacked, leaving her not only injured but also dealing with losses over $30,000 in stolen goods. The attackers' threats have been terrifying, making it clear they're out with intentions far darker than theft.

Arrest made in hate crime case

There has been a breakthrough: LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell announced an arrest on May 27. They caught Samuel Parros, now facing serious charges, including a hate crime and assault with a deadly weapon. Parros isn't going anywhere soon, with bail locked at $10,000 while he awaits his day in court.

Escalating violence at Sabrina's store

The violence began on April 8 when an unwelcome visitor made advances toward de la Peña at her shop. Once rejected, he revealed his violent side, attacking her upon learning she was transgender. The very day after, he returned with a skateboard, further assaulting her. De la Peña had no choice but defend herself, but soon faced a coordinated attack involving pepper spray and a Taser by three men, including her initial attacker.

A neighborhood in turmoil

For nearly 30 years, de la Peña has been a fixture in Westlake with her convenience store. Now, her peace has been shattered. LAPD Chief McDonnell has assured her that they're doing everything possible, vowing not just justice but also protection. Despite one arrest, however, Sabrina's main tormentor continues his spree, returning with different accomplices, leaving her in constant fear. Sabrina admits, "I can't work because I keep worrying he'll come back."

The plea: Help us find these attackers

LAPD needs your help. They're asking anyone with information about these attackers, still at large, contact Rampart Division Detectives at (213) 484-3495. Every tip counts—it's a dire situation that demands immediate attention from all corners.

The troubling trend: Violence against transgender individuals

This isn't just an isolated case. The Human Rights Campaign's 2024 report reveals 36 transgender and gender-expansive folks were murdered across America, with many being women from communities that already face systemic biases. And those numbers? They could be even worse in reality, hidden by misgendering or fear and mistrain in authorities.

What Sabrina's going through highlights just how vulnerable transgender people are when it comes personal safety. We need collective watchfulness and active support if we're going avoid future tragedies and secure justice.

Supporting Sabrina: Standing together as a community

Sabrina de la Peña has issued a call-to-action, asking her community help spot and bring her assailants justice. It falls on all us safeguard one another, especially those most at risk from prejudice-driven violence. Staying informed and championing transgender rights isn't just compassionate—it's necessary, as we strive create genuinely welcoming spaces.

When communities gather, we build worlds where everyone, no matter their gender identity, can live without dread. Whether by engaging with local LGBTQ+ groups or signing up newsletters, you can stay updated on ways make a positive impact.
