**Scottish soccer referee Lloyd Wilson: Advocating against homophobia**
It has been two years since Lloyd Wilson, a well-known referee in Scottish soccer, made a courageous move by publicly embracing his identity as a gay man. Despite facing ongoing challenges with homophobia in men's soccer, Wilson stands firm, saying he wouldn't change a thing. Now officiating in Scotland's top league and having secured a spot on a prestigious referee list, Wilson remains committed as ever in his mission: changing soccer from within.
Being true while facing challenges
Back in 2022, during Pride Month, Wilson made a big decision—he came out. Before that, soccer's pressures had kept him in hiding, impacting his mental well-being. But meeting his partner, Hamish, shifted everything. Hamish gave him that extra push. "Hamish was really key in my coming out," Wilson told Pride Of The Terraces.
Now, over two years on, Wilson and Hamish are still going strong, standing together. The support Wilson's received since coming out has been incredible, earning him honors like Football vs Homophobia's award in 2023 and recognition as a Stonewall Sport Champion.
Taking a stand against homophobia in soccer
Using his platform during LGBT+ History Month, Wilson tackles homophobic abuse in British soccer head-on. Statistics from a recent Home Office report showed that 4% percent were reported in men's professional matches in England and Wales during 2023-24.
February forms part and parcel in this cause with FvH's Month Of Action. Wilson expressed his concerns in an interview with STV News: "We still have quite a chronic problem," he noted, talking about how abuse impacts everyone involved in soccer. "There are people living in hiding who find it hard attending games," he pointed out. "That's why we're doing this."
Wilson believes change needs effort from fans and players alike, whether on field or online. His journey showcases overcoming years filled with internal struggles with homophobia linked directly within soccer culture itself—a testament now feeling empowered being openly himself within this realm.
Moving forward with pride in soccer
When Wilson came out, he wasn't alone. Fellow Scottish referee Craig Napier joined him, sharing their journeys in a sport not always welcoming. Napier, who also worked as a doctor, retired after 18 years officiating.
Joining Wilson now at Select Level refereeing circles includes Dan McFarlane—another openly gay referee who shared his journey on Football vs Homophobia Podcast, hoping it'll inspire others within LGBTQ+ community involved in soccer.
Wilson and McFarlane are active members within LGBTQ+ Professionals' Football Collective—a global network supporting LGBTQ individuals involved in soccer since its 2022 formation, growing beyond 60 members now partaking events like Football Pride and FvH Awards.
Promoting LGBTQ+ inclusion in soccer
The EFL Rainbow Ball initiative stands out promoting inclusion choosing FvH as this year's beneficiary. As part campaign effort EFL provides clubs special PUMA match ball adorned Progress Pride flag colors; goals scored Championships League One League Two during activation contribute donation towards FvH.
