Rutger published: School Board Member Criticized for Anti-LGBTQ+ Remarks Leaves Meeting Under Pressure

An elected school board member faced intense backlash during a recent meeting after controversial social media posts attacking the LGBTQ+ community surfaced. The official, Don Yarber, abruptly exited the meeting on Monday, March 24, after community members expressed their outrage over derogatory comments he had shared on Facebook.

Yarber's contentious post, which has since been deleted, referred to LGBTQ+ individuals as "degenerates" and made offensive remarks suggesting that exposure to LGBTQ+ people would lead to ailments such as AIDS and mental health issues. The post read: "Keep letting those queers influence the minds of your children. They won’t have any sickness except Aids, mental instability, suicidal thoughts..."

During the meeting, held in Union County, Kentucky, Yarber requested to be excused from the public comment session. However, his request was denied, and he was confronted by various community members, including Mark Lamb, a dance teacher at Union County Schools who is openly LGBTQ+.

Confrontation in the School Board Meeting

In a powerful speech, Mark Lamb addressed Yarber directly, recounting his own experiences with bullying and discrimination. "I've dealt with bullies all my life, so, when you made those comments on Facebook, they roll right off me because I have developed very tough skin," Lamb stated. "When I was a kid, I suffered messages like you said, when you cavalierly mentioned suicide and they made me not want to be alive... I believe that all of us need to do better. Even the bullies, even you."

As Lamb's allotted speaking time concluded, Yarber stood up abruptly, declaring, "I don't have to stand here and take this," before attempting to leave the room. His departure was met with further objections from parents and community members, who followed him out and continued to challenge his views on LGBTQ+ individuals.

One parent was notably vocal, asserting, "You don't get to walk out of here," as Yarber exited the meeting. The incident, captured on video, highlighted the community's collective frustration and demand for accountability from public officials.

District Response and Continuing Controversy

In the aftermath, Dr. Terra Hancock, the district superintendent, emphasized that the opinions shared by Yarber did not align with the values of Union County schools. She clarified that while school board members are elected officials and not employees of the district, the district itself could not legally control or discipline them based on their personal statements.

Despite the public outcry, Yarber returned to Facebook to post another message, stating: "Once again, the gay community has been allowed to say, 'It's OK to be gay'. And I have not been allowed to say, 'No, it’s not'." His continued defiance and refusal to apologize have only fueled the controversy further.

The Importance of Respectful Dialogue

The incident has sparked a broader discussion about the responsibilities of public officials to foster an inclusive and accepting environment, particularly within educational settings. With LGBTQ+ students and community members directly impacted by such rhetoric, many are calling for a reevaluation of the standards to which elected officials are held.

As the debate continues, Union County residents are reminded of the importance of maintaining respectful and constructive dialogue. Community leaders are urging individuals to engage in these conversations with empathy and understanding, acknowledging the diverse experiences and identities within the community.
