Rutger published: Sarah McBride: Grace Under Fire as a Transgender Trailblazer in Congress

Congress Welcomes Its First Openly Transgender Member

As Congress convenes for the new session, Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of the U.S. House of Representatives, has already made waves, drawing both criticism and admiration. Her presence in Congress is a historic milestone for the LGBTQ+ community, representing courage and resilience.

Finding Inspiration in Jackie Robinson

In a candid conversation with a transgender journalist, McBride shared how she draws inspiration from Jackie Robinson, the first Black player in Major League Baseball. Robinson faced a barrage of racism and hostility, yet maintained dignity and composure. McBride is quick to acknowledge the distinct challenges faced by people of color but sees parallels in the scrutiny and expectations placed on pioneers.

"I don't equate my experiences or our community's struggles with those of people of color," McBride clarifies. "However, much like Jackie Robinson, trailblazers often endure intense scrutiny. Strength is found in grace under pressure."

Learning from History and Modern Role Models

Born two decades after Robinson's death, McBride learned about his life from the 2013 film "42," starring Chadwick Boseman. The film's depiction of Robinson's restraint and composure resonated deeply with her. "If you respond to a slur, they'll only hear your slur," McBride reflects. "That lesson informs how I and others navigate being 'firsts.'"

McBride also looks up to contemporary figures like Jennifer Finney Boylan and Mara Keisling, who exemplify compassion and thoughtfulness in their advocacy work. She highlights the importance of maintaining composure amidst attacks, understanding that her responses are scrutinized by both supporters and detractors.

The Personal Toll of Public Scrutiny

"They'll misgender me, and my job is not to react as they hope," McBride states. "It's understandable that people feel hurt when they see attacks on me. As a 'first,' my highs and lows are intensely felt by others."

McBride's resolve is to avoid giving critics the reaction they seek, thereby challenging the negative stereotypes often portrayed about transgender individuals. "We've been caricatured as self-obsessed or as 'pronoun police,'" she explains. By presenting a broader spectrum of transgender identities and stories, McBride aims to change public perceptions.

Honoring Personal Influences and Legacy

McBride's journey is also shaped by her late husband, Andrew Cray, a transgender man who passed away from cancer shortly after their wedding. Cray's pragmatic and principled approach to activism continues to guide her. "Andy was my sherpa into change-making," McBride fondly recalls. "I strive to reflect his approach in my work."

Her confidence has grown since being elected, often pondering, "What would Andy do?" A recent encounter with one of Cray's friends, who wore Andy's tie and assured McBride of her path, provided a poignant moment of validation.

Amidst these reflections, McBride experienced a serendipitous moment when she found her wedding ring, thought lost forever, during this meaningful exchange. "It was a beautiful moment," she recounts, "as if Andy was reassuring me in that instant."

Looking Forward

Sarah McBride's presence in Congress is not just a personal triumph but a beacon of hope and progress for the transgender community. Her journey is a testament to the power of grace under fire, and her leadership is poised to inspire future generations.
