Rutger published: Sarah Kate Ellis on Media Truth and the LGBTQ+ Community's Fight

With Donald Trump stepping back onto center stage as president, Sarah Kate Ellis, who leads GLAAD, has her sights set on how LGBTQ+ issues are being portrayed in American media. She's determined that these topics are handled with honesty, especially when politics tends toward painting skewed pictures.

Ellis puts it bluntly: "Who holds influence over media holds influence over politics." GLAAD's research has uncovered a concerning rise in anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric on platforms like Facebook and X, and she's sounding an alarm.

Navigating social media and holding media accountable

Under Elon Musk's stewardship, X has become a breeding ground right-wing viewpoints. Meanwhile, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg has relaxed rules on hate speech and halted fact-checking, saying he's wary about bias. Ellis sees this as alarming, suggesting a lack in accountability that's disguised as political neutrality. "People deserve honesty," she asserts.

How media shapes perception

Having steered GLAAD's ship over ten years, Ellis has been on a mission: keep an eye on how media tells stories about LGBTQ+ folks and push back against distorted narratives. "Media changes fast," she notes, "and we've got a duty: ensure it stays truthful and real."

Ellis finds it particularly disturbing that right-wing media spreads misinformation on LGBTQ+ rights. Data shows public support slipping away from marriage equality and nondiscrimination laws, fueled by damaging rhetoric calling LGBTQ+ individuals "groomers." These stories help drive political agendas that unfairly cast queer communities as dangers.

"We must protect hard-won rights," Ellis warns, especially given Trump's promises that threaten LGBTQ+ protections and push religious discrimination further.

Using storytelling as a weapon against misinformation

GLAAD fights back by educating and sharing stories from LGBTQ+ voices. At big events like Emmys, Ellis and allies like RuPaul have championed visibility and rights. Even Oprah Winfrey has joined in, sharing stories that make LGBTQ+ experiences more relatable.

Ellis talks about how storytelling can shift perspectives. "It becomes a lot harder not liking someone once you know their story," she says, highlighting how sharing stories helps people see LGBTQ+ individuals as friends, neighbors, and family.

She also calls attention toward understanding gender-affirming care, pointing out that plenty self-affirming practices aren't limited by gender. By showing these similarities, Ellis hopes people will see trans rights not as threatening, but as necessary.

Advocacy, influence, and what you can do

GLAAD's work goes beyond just stories. They're teaming up with advertisers and tech giants promote LGBTQ+ representation and clamp down on harmful content. They also weigh in on policy discussions that affect LGBTQ+ communities.

Ellis stresses how important individual efforts are in backing marginalized groups. "Everyone's got a platform now," she says, "and it's vital we lift LGBTQ voices in our everyday talks."

Her strategy highlights GLAAD's mission: foster understanding and equality, make sure LGBTQ+ rights and stories get their due respect. Under Ellis's guidance, GLAAD's driving change, championing a media scene that values truth and inclusivity.
