Rutger published: San Francisco Drag Performer Granted Asylum After ICE Detention

A talented drag performer from San Francisco has been granted asylum in the United States after enduring a challenging three-month detention period under the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Hilary Rivers, known for her captivating performances, was released on September 20, following a turbulent experience that began when she was apprehended by ICE agents.

Rivers, originally from El Salvador and raised in Guatemala, was arrested on June 26 outside an immigration court. This arrest occurred just a day after she participated in the prestigious Miss and Mr Safe Latino pageant. Despite the warnings from concerned friends about increasing detentions, Rivers chose to attend her court appointment, cognizant of the potential consequences of not appearing.

Detention and Struggle for Freedom

The sequence of events that transpired at the court was both alarming and distressing. "They asked for my name, but my lawyer and I remained quiet," Rivers recounted. "Suddenly, they grabbed me, pushed me against the wall, and shackled me. Despite my lawyer’s attempts to intervene, they restrained him and placed me in chains. I had never been arrested before, and it was terrifying."

During her detention at the Golden State Annex, over 250 miles from her San Francisco home, Rivers experienced harsh and inhumane conditions. She reported a lack of protection from the staff and insufficient measures to prevent harassment or sexual violence. "Once, I woke up to someone touching me," she lamented. She described the crowded and cold environment where detainees had to stand for hours, with no room to sit or warmth to ward off the freezing temperatures.

Resilience and Advocacy

Upon her release, Rivers returned to San Francisco with an asylum grant, yet she faced the daunting realization that she had lost everything during her detention, from her home to crucial personal documents. Not one to be easily discouraged, Rivers is now focused on rebuilding her life and advocating for others who find themselves in similar predicaments.

"We have to fight for our dreams," she declared. "I paid a high price, but nothing is impossible. We must never let them break us. It’s important to understand our rights and resist signing documents we don’t fully comprehend. Every person has equal worth, regardless of their background."

In an effort to support her new beginning, a GoFundMe campaign has been established to assist Rivers in re-establishing her life and securing the essentials she lost during her detention.

Challenges Facing the LGBTQ+ Community

The struggles faced by Rivers are set against a backdrop of heightened enforcement activities by ICE. The agency is reportedly receiving significant funding from Congress to fulfill immigration mandates, with plans to expand its workforce by 10,000 over the next four years. This has resulted in a substantial increase in arrests and detentions, affecting many in the LGBTQ+ community.

In a related story, Eric Duran, a prominent TikToker, expressed gratitude to his followers for their unwavering support as he campaigned for the release of his partner from ICE custody. His fight underscores the ongoing challenges and the resilience of individuals and their communities in the face of adversity.

As we reflect on these stories, it is crucial to engage in respectful and informed discussions to support and uplift those who are marginalized. Share your thoughts and experiences, and remember to foster a community of kindness and understanding.
