Rutger published: San Francisco Appoints First-Ever Transgender Drag Laureate
San Francisco has taken a historic step by naming its very first transgender Drag Laureate, a move that adds a remarkable chapter in its vibrant LGBTQ+ history. Per Sia, a gifted performer and committed educator, has been honored with this role, becoming a beacon within both drag and transgender circles.

Per Sia: a trailblazer in drag

Per Sia isn't just making waves in San Francisco's drag scene—she's been a trailblazer from day one. As one among those pioneering Drag Queen Story Hour, a program that gets kids jazzed about reading through spirited storytelling, she embodies diversity as a proud trans Mexican-American. Her multifaceted identity adds depth and impact, enriching those around her and inspiring change. "I'm visibly trans, I'm brown, I'm Mexican, and I'm a product from immigrant parents. Being an educator working with kids and a drag performer adds another layer," Per Sia shared. Her diverse identity stands as both a challenge and a triumph in today's complex political stage.

The role as San Francisco's Drag Laureate

Back in 2023, San Francisco introduced its Drag Laureate role, aiming at spotlighting and celebrating drag artistry in its cultural tapestry. Initially set up as an 18-month stint, it's now a three-year gig, thanks in part, sponsored by San Francisco Public Library, and comes with a $35,000 stipend. Per Sia takes over from D'Arcy Drollinger, a beloved icon in San Francisco's nightlife, who paved a formidable path as a Drag Laureate. Drollinger, who was instrumental in selecting Per Sia, applauded her appointment, noting how vital this role remains in uplifting diversity and representation within queer culture.

Advocacy and education: Per Sia's forte

For over a decade, Per Sia has been more than just a performer—she's been a guiding light at Rooftop School, where she spearheads Children's After School Arts (CASA). Her personal transformation from a young queer person embracing her trans identity and thriving as a drag performer has left a lasting impact on her community. "Making this announcement at Rooftop was truly special," Per Sia explained. "My students and those dear got a front-row seat as my personal and professional worlds joyously collided."

Spreading joy and promoting inclusion

During her announcement, Per Sia radiated excitement, promising "joy, brown joy, queer joy, all kinds!" in her new position as Drag Laureate. Her mission? Celebrate diversity, cultivate understanding, and spotlight universal themes found in children's literature. Her involvement with Drag Queen Story Hour speaks volumes, marrying her love (and talent!) in education with performance. "Children's books, in their simplicity, are profound," she reflects. "They speak about self-acceptance, love, and empathy—truths that connect us all."

Looking ahead: a vision bright with promise

Mayor Daniel Lurie highlighted Per Sia's appointment, remarking, "As a global sanctuary, our city champions living authentically. With Per Sia as our Drag Laureate, she'll personify that spirit, leading with both visibility and pride." In her role, Per Sia envisions reaching across San Francisco's diverse LGBTQ+ community, taking center stage at Pride events, acting as a voicepiece, and championing arts advocacy. Her mission? Break barriers, foster inclusive spaces, and revel in San Francisco's rich cultural mosaic. As Drag Laureate, Per Sia aims high—battling censorship, amplifying community voices, and advocating literacy and acceptance. Her commitment? Cultivate a universe where every person embraces their true self, freely and fully. Don't miss out on stirring LGBTQ+ updates and perspectives—subscribe now!
