Recently, I had the pleasure of speaking with Sam Nicoresti, a comedian who has been making waves in the stand-up scene. After a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe, where Sam won the coveted Best Comedy Show award, it's clear that their career is on a thrilling trajectory.
Fringe Reflections and Future Plans
"I officially declared the Fringe over about half an hour ago," Sam told me with a hint of relief. "And I slept for nine hours for the first time in five weeks, so something has definitely been crossed," they continued. That "something," Sam humorously described, is "Hell."
It had been nearly a week since Sam (she/they) won the prestigious award for Baby Doomer, her acclaimed show. "Bloody hell. Time moves on, doesn't it?" Sam remarked with surprise. "I'm a little tired," she admitted, reflecting on the whirlwind of events.
Sam's next big project is preparing for her wedding. When accepting the award, she had joked about using the prize money for the nuptials. "I would be in such trouble if I were to claim that were a joke," she laughed, hinting at the seriousness of her plans.
Creative Challenges and the Comedy Scene
The walls that once bore the planning of Baby Doomer now feature a single card labeled "Wedding." "We've made quite a good intro with the pre-show playlist," Sam shared. "I'm struggling to get out of show mode with it. I've been talking about the song that we come down the aisle to as 'walk on music.'"
When asked about the possibility of a theatrical wedding, Sam mused, "I saw pictures, it looked fabulous and insane. But yeah, I think we'll have a normal wedding." However, the allure of Edinburgh during the Fringe remains, "all of our friends are already there," she noted.
Reflecting on her experiences, Sam mentioned the challenges posed by the rising costs of performing at the Fringe. "I can't afford to come up and have fun. I came up to work for a month," she explained. Despite these challenges, the career rewards have been worthwhile. Yet, Sam is concerned about accessibility, "The Fringe should not be these Highlander-style games where there can only be one at the end."
Social Media and Identity
The success of her show is also attributed to the viral success of her special Wokeflake, which gained traction online. "Social media has sidestepped gatekeepers in that you can access your audience directly," Sam observed. While Wokeflake was about explaining the trans experience, Baby Doomer is more inclusive, "I want trans people to feel like they're being seen," Sam emphasized. Yet, she resists being pigeonholed as a "trans comedian." "I'm a comedian and being trans is, I guess, part of how you would describe me," she explained, advocating for a broader understanding of identity.
