Sam Kerr, the captain of the Australian women’s national soccer team and a prominent striker for Chelsea, has expressed her gratitude to her partner Kristie Mewis after being acquitted of racially aggravated harassment charges. The case stemmed from an incident involving a police officer and a taxi ride that occurred earlier this year.
Kerr, who has led the Matildas since 2019, faced legal scrutiny following an altercation during a taxi ride in the early hours of January 30, 2023. The taxi driver alleged that the couple refused to pay a cleaning fee after one of them was sick in the vehicle and that they caused damage by breaking the rear window. This led to their transport to the Twickenham Police Station.
During the course of their interaction with law enforcement, Kerr was accused by PC Stephen Lovell of using "abusive and insulting" language, specifically calling him "stupid and white," which led to the charges of racially aggravated harassment. The jury at Kingston Crown Court, however, did not find sufficient evidence to convict her, reaching a not guilty verdict after four hours of deliberation. A guilty verdict could have resulted in a prison sentence of up to two years.
Following the verdict, Kerr released a public statement expressing relief at the outcome and apologizing for her choice of words during the heated incident. She emphasized that she never intended to harm or insult anyone and was thankful for the jury’s unanimous agreement.
"After today’s not guilty verdict, I can finally put this challenging period behind me," Kerr stated. "While I apologize for expressing myself poorly on what was a traumatic evening, I have always maintained that I did not intend to insult or harm anyone and I am thankful that the jury unanimously agreed."
Kerr also took the opportunity to thank Kristie Mewis, her fiancée and fellow footballer, along with her family, friends, and fans for their unwavering support throughout the trial. "I am fully focused on getting back on to the pitch and look forward to an exciting year ahead for me and my family," she added.
The incident unfolded after Kerr and Mewis had spent an evening out and subsequently hailed a black cab. Kerr recounted that she felt ill during the ride and leaned her head out of the window to be sick. According to her, the driver then rolled the window back up, prompting a dispute over the cleaning fee. The driver, apparently without their knowledge, contacted the police and headed towards the police station.
As they approached the station, Mewis broke the rear window with her feet, feeling that they were being held against their will. Kerr also called emergency services, stating that the taxi driver "won’t let us out." At the station, Kerr felt the officers were dismissive of their safety concerns, which contributed to her frustrated comments towards PC Lovell.
The aftermath of the trial saw Football Australia issuing a statement recognizing Kerr's prominent role within the sport and acknowledging the pressures she faced during the legal proceedings. They affirmed their continued support for Kerr as she focuses on her sporting career and recovery from injury.
"Football Australia invests heavily in building the behavioral standards and expectations of all involved with our game," the statement read. "We will reflect with Sam on learnings from this matter and continue to provide appropriate support for her moving forward."
The organization also acknowledged the impact the situation had on Kerr, Mewis, and their families, as well as the broader football community. Throughout the ordeal, Football Australia has remained committed to supporting Kerr as she navigates her career and personal life.
Kerr and Mewis, both of whom play in the Women’s Super League, now look forward to moving past this incident and focusing on their future together, both on and off the field.
