Russian Citizen Penalized for Jest About Founding LGBTQ+ Movement

In a recent development that highlights the ongoing crackdown on LGBTQ+ rights in Russia, a Russian citizen has been penalized for making a joke about being the originator of the global LGBTQ+ rights movement. This incident illuminates the severe restrictions and harsh penalties imposed on expressions of LGBTQ+ identity in the country.

The so-called movement, deemed extremist by Russia's Supreme Court in 2023, does not officially exist. However, individuals connected to it or accused of promoting it face potential imprisonment and heavy fines. This comes in the wake of Russia's stringent anti-LGBTQ+ propaganda laws, which have led to numerous raids on establishments and the arrest and prosecution of several individuals. Tragically, one individual recently lost their life while in police custody.

According to an independent Russian-language news outlet, Anton Yevdokimov, a 36-year-old, was found guilty in November 2023 of disseminating "propaganda of non-traditional relations" on the Russian social media platform VKontakte. This judgement was made public only recently via the court database.

The court documents reveal that authorities identified a post by Yevdokimov from December 2023. In this post, he humorously claimed to be the founder and leading figure of an imagined LGBTQ+ extremist organization, while posing with a Pride flag. He wrote, "Now that they've banned LGBT, it's time to confess: I am the founder and main organiser of the LGBTQ+ extremist organisation. I went to Rainbow High School, was recruited there and now irradiate all homophobes with rainbows. Every time a homophobe looks at a rainbow, they get a tingle." His brash humor, however, was not appreciated by the court, which imposed a fine of 100,000 rubles (approximately £795 or $975).

In a climate of increasing hostility towards LGBTQ+ identities, the Russian authorities have intensified their clampdown on what they describe as extremist activities. In the past few months, this has resulted in the imprisonment of bar staff and venue owners, the detention of over 50 club-goers, and the banning of queer content on various platforms, including the language-learning app Duolingo. The children's cartoon My Little Pony has been classified as 18+ due to its content, and a student was expelled from university for sharing make-up tutorials.

More recently, Andrei Kotov, the director of a travel agency, was arrested in November and charged with participating in and organizing extremist activities. Disturbingly, Kotov was found dead in his cell. Investigators allege that he established "an extremist community" where propaganda was disseminated, challenging traditional family values as defined by the Russian Constitution.

The investigative committee has launched an inquiry into Kotov's death, with reports suggesting that his body bore cuts. Human rights organizations, such as OVD-Info, have expressed concern over this incident and the broader pattern of political persecution in Russia.

These events underscore the precarious situation facing LGBTQ+ individuals and communities in Russia. The legal and social environment is increasingly repressive, with severe consequences for those who express or are perceived to express non-traditional sexual orientations or gender identities.
