In a chilling development, Russia's Interior Ministry seems set on creating an extensive electronic registry targeting LGBTQ+ citizens. This move comes as pressure mounts on this community, following a controversial ruling by Russia's Supreme Court. The court's decision, heavily influenced by President Vladimir Putin, labels what it calls an "international LGBT movement" as an extremist group.
Fears growing over increased government watch
Sources within Russia's Interior Ministry indicate that talks about this expansive LGBTQ+ database have been happening since last year. It's being described as something straight outta Orwell, capable even, it seems, with systematically tracking LGBTQ+ individuals across Russia.
Dmitry Chukreyeyv, an official in Yekateyeerinburg's Civic Chamber, confirms these unsettling plans. He points out that police have already been keeping informal lists ever since that Supreme Court decision came down.
The situation's gotten even darker with an upswing in raids on LGBTQ+ friendly places throughout Russia. Just this year, more than 42 raids have been recorded by independent news and human rights organizations. These raids? They're marked by harassment, forced confinement, and humiliation based on people's sexual orientation or gender identity.
Intimidation and data gathering through raids
These raids seem designed both as scare tactics and data harvesters, feeding info back toward this proposed registry. An employee at a queer venue in Siberia recounted one instance where security forces made off with entire databases from computers, full names and other sensitive personal data. At a raid on Eden club in Chelyabinsk, visitors were fingerprinted, had oral swabs taken, while guests and staff at Pose club in Orenburg were bullied until they revealed their home addresses on camera.
In one particularly invasive raid at a house party in Leningrad Oblast, guests were forced not only out their passports but also unlock their phones. Those who resisted faced collective punishment—as humiliating as being made squat together.
Human rights activists say these raids also aim at flushing out LGBTQ+ folks working within government ranks. Organizers hosting queer-friendly events around Urals region have said how law enforcement targeted their ops trying "catch deputies" along other significant figures.
Challenges facing LGBTQ+ registry rollout
Despite continuing efforts, getting this comprehensive LGBTQ+ registry off ground has hit delays. Partly 'cos Russian authorities are busy focusing resources elsewhere—on their military ventures trying expand influence over in Ukraine—instead home front surveillance projects.
Still, those raids continue reeling in tons data. Like one raid happening at both restaurant and club located Gorno-Altaysk, captured info about 80 patrons plus staff. Security forces conducting them didn't hold back saying sinisterly: "We know all you now."
These actions have drawn serious concern from international human rights organizations who see them part larger campaign suppress dissent minority rights right inside Russia.
Living daily gets dangerous if LGBTQ+ person within Russia. With mounting hostility coming both government also society, getting targeted just simply being who they are brings very real fears underneath constant ever-watchful eye.
