Rutger published: RuPaul’s Drag Race Faces Backlash After AI Animated Special Removed
"RuPaul's Drag Race" has always been a vibrant celebration and a cornerstone in LGBTQ+ culture, known best perhaps, aside from its glitter and glam, as a platform that showcases incredible human artistry. But recently, it found itself at odds with some fans over an unexpected move involving AI-generated content. Fans were taken aback when an AI-animated special popped up on their YouTube channel. Surprise quickly turned sour, and after facing a wave a backlash, it was swiftly removed.

Fans aren't thrilled with AI animation

On July 1st, "RuPaul's Drag Race" surprised their YouTube audience with an animated short, "Jinkx & Plasma's Gay Adventure! Original Animated Holiday Short | RuPaul's Drag Race." And at first glance, it seemed like a dream. It starred Jinkx Monsoon, beloved winner from both Season Five and "All Stars 7," alongside Plasma from Season Sixteen, who's known and celebrated on stage and screen. Their adventure unfolded amidst familiar backdrops from "Drag Race" sprinkled with Shirley Bassey tunes. The buzz was real, but then people noticed something was off—the AI-generated visuals. Fans, so used they were, and quite rightly so, too, found their spirits dampened by this departure from genuine human creativity.

Social media erupts over AI content

It didn't take long before Twitter lit up with opinions. "GreenGay," a popular Drag Race commentary channel, tweeted, "The RPDR channel just uploaded an AI animated special, and I just don't get why they didn't hire an artist…" A sentiment shared far and wide, many fans felt this AI move was a step away from what made Drag Race legendary: its fierce originality. Another voice, "JackFed," remarked, "Drag Race thrives on queer artists' creativity, not on AI-generated stuff that falls flat." Ouch. It was hard not noticing how ironic it seemed, too—here were iconic Drag Race moments coming back but wrapped in layers that voided their original sparkle. A fan even quipped, "Drag Race released a terrible animated short with a Shirley Bassey soundtrack over AI nonsense. Offended, much?"

Rallying behind real artists

At its heart, this uproar called out a perception, a fear maybe, that AI might edge out genuine talent. Nothing quite like a masterpiece made by real hands, right? Plasma, featured in this special, shared fellow contestant Megami's sentiment: "AI could never create a masterpiece like this. Support REAL artists!" And support they should. The silence, however, from Jinkx, Plasma, or any official Drag Race reps leaves fans guessing. Why go this route? Why take it down?

What's happening now and what's on horizon

While all this chat about AI rumbles on, "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 10" keeps its glitz and glamour on. We recently saw Cynthia Lee Fontaine, Daya Betty, and Ginger Minj soaring through Purple Bracket semi-finals. Awaiting them in fierce competition are Orange Bracket's Aja, Bosco, and Irene, and Pink Bracket's Jorgeous, Lydia B. Kollins, and Mistress Isabelle Brooks. Catch "RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 10" every Friday on Paramount+ in America, or WOW Presents Plus wherever else you may be tuning in. The drama and creativity continue, even as we keep pondering where AI might fit in this canvas. We'd love your thoughts, so do join in on this conversation in comments below. Let's keep it respectful and fun as we dive deeper on AI's impact within creative spaces!
