Bob the Drag Queen, the winner of season eight of RuPaul’s Drag Race, is known for her quick wit and unstoppable charisma. Remarkably, throughout her season, Bob only found herself in the bottom two once, but she was always prepared to perform if needed.
Every winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race has a unique journey, but a common factor is their ability to shine without frequently landing in the bottom. Some, like Bianca Del Rio and Sasha Colby, never needed to lip-sync for their lives, while others, such as Symone, faced the pressure more than once. Most winners, however, only lip-sync once, making their performances memorable and iconic.
Consider Raja’s unforgettable moment with Carmen Carrera in season three, or Yvie Oddly’s explosive rendition of "Sorry Not Sorry" against Brooke Lynn Hytes in season 11. Bob the Drag Queen’s sole lip-sync, against Derrick Barry during the season eight 'Book Ball', is another standout performance.
Despite only needing to lip-sync once, Bob revealed she had a strategy for every episode. During a conversation on the podcast Sibling Rivalry, which she co-hosts with fellow Drag Race winner Monét X Change, Bob discussed her preparation process. Reflecting on Lydia B. Kollins’ unfortunate mishap during season 17, Bob shared her insights.
"Girl, you should have cut it [backstage] or something," Bob advised, referencing Kollins' predicament. Monét added, "But it’s your first season, Bob, you play by the rules." To this, Bob humorously replied, "No I did not!" and elaborated on her tactics.
Bob explained, "Every single time, except the one time I was in the bottom, I went and prepared a gag. For the paint drip on my head during the neon runway, I had acrylic paint hidden in my costume. I was ready to pull it out, pour it on myself, spit it out – I had a gag for every lip-sync. If I had to lip-sync, I was ready!"
Bob’s dedication to ensuring each potential lip-sync moment was unforgettable is a testament to her creative prowess. Her meticulous planning mirrors the legendary moment created by Sasha Velour during the season nine finale, where she famously revealed rose petals during her performance.
Aside from her iconic run on RuPaul’s Drag Race, Bob has expanded her talents beyond the stage. Recently, she has appeared on a season of The Traitors, showcasing her versatility and competitive spirit. Additionally, Bob is a novelist, further proving her multifaceted talent.
Bob’s career continues to flourish, with new projects and performances captivating audiences worldwide. Her ability to entertain and engage both on and off the screen solidifies her status as a beloved figure in the drag community.
As RuPaul’s Drag Race moves forward, currently airing its 17th season, the show’s legacy of elevating drag performers continues. Each new season brings a fresh batch of talent ready to carry the torch and push the boundaries of drag artistry.
Fans eagerly await the new queens’ performances, anticipating the creativity and ingenuity that have become the hallmark of the franchise. Bob the Drag Queen’s story is an inspiring chapter in the ongoing saga of RuPaul’s Drag Race, reminding us of the importance of preparation and creativity in achieving success.
