For Roz Hernandez, a comedian and ghost hunter, laughter isn't just a pastime; it's a form or rebellion and strength. She's currently on her one-of-a-kind comedy tour, "Roz Hernandez Does Comedy in a Gay Bar," hitting LGBTQ+ venues all over America until August. This tour isn't backed by a big budget—it's all Roz, driven purely by her passion. From picking venues that feel like home, planning every step, she's doing it all herself. Her goal? To spread joy and laughter among queer folks everywhere.
Roz has carved out a niche with her popular podcast, "Ghosted!" and her quirky YouTube series, "The Haunted Doll," where she blends supernatural elements with her own personal tales. Her ghost hunts might involve a Grindr date or a creepy hotel night, but her stand-up? That's all about her life as a trans woman in America, with all its absurdities.
"I love my life. I love being me. I find my life really silly and ridiculous," Roz shares. "And I like leaning right in."
Roz's tour takes her back on stages in LGBTQ+ bars, reminiscent her early days as a drag performer. In a society that can feel hostile, Roz's performances shout one thing: joy in defiance. For her, being on stage isn't just about laughs; it's a declaration that trans people are here, they're funny, and they don't need anyone's approval.
This tour isn't about climbing Hollywood's ladder. With Tinseltown not knocking on her door, Roz decided she'd make her own opportunities. "If there's something I want, I'm gonna do it," she says. Her mission? To perform in spaces where queer folks feel safe and celebrated.
With years in comedy, Roz has moved from being a punch line herself, from being a punch line, she's become a voice. Her comedy offers a raw, funny take on trans life, relatable whether you're trans or not. "I try talking about being trans in a funny, relatable manner," she says. "Because it seems like when jokes about trans folks happen, it's rarely trans people making them."
Roz also stars in "We Are Pat," debuting at Tribeca Film Festival. The documentary explores "Pat" from SNL and its impact on today's trans comedians, diving deep gender and humor themes.
Despite her rising star, Roz isn't aiming be anyone's hero. "I'm just a messy, silly gal who loves talking about sex and cracking jokes," she chuckles. Yet, her vibrant presence, whether on stage or in haunted spots, undeniably empowers.
Roz's passion paranormal never fades. On "Ghosted!," she chats with stars like Kristen Stewart, TS Madison, Bob The Drag Queen, Margaret Cho, and Sasha Colby. "You don't have believe in ghosts love this. It's about stories, community, and camp," she says. Likewise, "The Haunted Doll" adds a queer flair ghost hunting, with tales from Grindr, haunted hotels, and eerie happenings.
Though she often chases ghosts, Roz remains firmly grounded. Touring's tough, especially as a trans woman. But she doesn't let challenges stop her; she's all about bringing laughter and happiness.
Her main goal? Just being funny.
