The much-anticipated Clueless the Musical is ready to dazzle audiences at London's Trafalgar Theatre starting Saturday, February 15th. With a fresh take on the beloved 1995 film, this musical adaptation adds a new layer of excitement and nostalgia for fans of the original movie.
Inspired by Jane Austen's timeless novel Emma, Clueless follows the charming yet oblivious high-schooler Cher Horowitz. Known for her matchmaking prowess, Cher embarks on her grandest endeavor yet: transforming her friend Tai and finding her the perfect boyfriend. However, in the process, Cher comes to realize that she needs to focus on her own happiness and romantic life.
Amy Heckerling, the visionary behind the film, brings her expertise to the stage by penning the book for the musical. Accompanying her is acclaimed singer-songwriter KT Tunstall, who has composed an electrifying score that breathes new life into the story. "I am totally in love with the brilliant new talent we have been working with," Heckerling shared. "I can't wait for audiences to be thrilled with their singing, dancing, their heart and humour."
Among the talented cast is Isaac J Lewis, who takes on the role of Christian Stovitz, a fan-favorite gay character who adds depth and humor to the story. Christian, reminiscent of Emma's Frank Churchill, enters Cher's life as a potential romantic interest, challenging her "no high-school boys" policy. However, when it's revealed that Christian is gay, he and Cher become fast friends and shopping companions.
Isaac J Lewis, a rising star in the West End theatre scene, brings charisma and authenticity to Christian's character. Originally from Bristol, Lewis now resides in London, having honed his craft at the prestigious Arts Educational School. His impressive repertoire includes roles in blockbuster productions like The Book of Mormon, Hairspray, Dr Zhivago, and A Chorus Line. Lewis also showcased his talent in the lead role of the stage version of Catch Me If You Can.
KT Tunstall teases that Christian's journey in the musical remains "quite honest, quite true to the film." The character navigates the complexities of being gay in high school, where some peers are aware of his sexuality but remain indifferent. "Christian isn’t completely comfortable being out in the school… a lot of the other kids do know and they don’t care," Tunstall explained.
Lewis's performance is sure to resonate with audiences, offering a heartfelt portrayal that captures both the fun and the challenges Christian faces.
As the opening night approaches, excitement builds among the cast and crew. Lewis recently shared his enthusiasm on social media, posting a snapshot of himself beside an advertisement for Clueless the Musical on the London Underground. He expressed his excitement, saying he was "buzzing" to be part of the production.
Clueless the Musical promises to be a must-see theatrical event, with performances running from February 15th to June 14th. Fans of the film and newcomers alike will be captivated by the engaging performances, witty dialogue, and memorable music.
