Join the Celebration with Metro's Rainbow Rides

Washington D.C. is ready to host one of the most anticipated Pride events of the year, welcoming droves of visitors and locals to celebrate diversity, love, and community. To enhance the festive atmosphere, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) is rolling out a vibrant fleet of vehicles designed to spread the joy of Pride across the city.

Beginning May 24th, WMATA launched a series of specially decorated vehicles to honor the WorldPride celebration. This includes a stunning array of train cars, buses, and even a Metro operations vehicle, all adorned with striking rainbow stripes and the inspiring message: “Metro proudly welcomes the world.” These colorful modes of transportation invite everyone to ride with Pride and embrace the spirit of unity.

Track Your Pride Ride

In an exciting twist, WMATA allows riders to follow these unique WorldPride-themed vehicles in real time. Simply visit the WMATA website and select the “Special Edition” option to see where your rainbow ride is currently traveling. It's a fun way to engage with the Pride festivities and ensure you don't miss a moment of the colorful celebration.

Enhanced Metro Services for the Pride Weekend

To accommodate the anticipated influx of two to three million visitors, WMATA is boosting rail services from June 6-8. This includes extended operations of the Yellow Line to Greenbelt Station on June 7 and 8, helping to alleviate congestion on routes serving WorldPride events.

Metro is also extending its hours during the Pride weekend:

  • Friday, June 6: Metro service will run one hour later, closing at 2 a.m.
  • Saturday, June 7: Metro opens an hour earlier at 6 a.m. and operates until 2 a.m.
  • Sunday, June 8: Metro will be available from 6 a.m. to midnight.

It's important to check individual station schedules as last train times can vary. The “Stations” page on the WMATA website or app provides all necessary timing information. Additionally, several Metrobus routes will continue to operate 24/7 throughout the city.

Frequent Service for Easy Access

During daytime hours, riders can expect frequent train services, arriving every 4–6 minutes at key central stations, with 8–12 minute intervals at stations further afield. This ensures everyone can reach their destination in a timely and efficient manner, making Metro the preferred choice for navigating D.C. during Pride.

Innovative Travel Solutions for Pride-Goers

WMATA General Manager Randy Clarke emphasizes the importance of Metro during international events. “Washington D.C. thrives on major global gatherings, and WorldPride is no exception,” he states. “Metro offers the optimal travel solution, enhanced with our upcoming seamless fare payment initiatives and the new MetroPulse app designed to streamline navigation.”

One of the most exciting updates is the introduction of the “Tap. Ride. Go.” fare payment system. This groundbreaking feature allows riders to enter the Metrorail system using a simple tap of a credit card, debit card, or mobile wallet. No longer will there be a need for physical SmarTrip cards. However, it's crucial to use the same card for both entry and exit, and be aware that transfer discounts are not available with this new payment method. Look forward to its expansion to Metrobus and Metro-operated parking facilities soon.
