Rian Johnson Talks About a Potential Knives Out and Muppets Film
The internet has long been fascinated by the idea of a crossover between Knives Out and the beloved Muppets, and writer-director Rian Johnson has finally addressed the possibility of such a collaboration. While fans have been eagerly speculating about this mashup, Johnson's recent comments may not provide the news they were hoping for.
As Johnson continues to expand the Knives Out universe, with plans for further instalments beyond the upcoming third murder mystery, the internet has buzzed with ideas for new and intriguing settings for the series. Among these, one of the most popular and whimsical suggestions has been a crossover with the Muppets.
Fans have taken to social media to express their enthusiasm for the concept. One user humorously posted, "Okay so muppets knives out when," capturing the playful spirit of the fanbase. Another fan, in a moment of spirited creativity, tweeted, "Listen [Johnson] I may be three margaritas in but my neighbors and I want to know if the next Knives Out can be all Muppets except for Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc." The idea of Craig's character, the astute detective Benoit Blanc, solving mysteries alongside the quirky Muppet cast has captured the imagination of many.
Some fans have even gone so far as to create mock posters for the hypothetical film, imagining titles like "FLEECED: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY (2025)." These fan-created graphics showcase the creativity and enthusiasm surrounding the potential project, keeping the idea alive in online communities.
Despite the playful speculation, Johnson recently clarified his stance on the matter. Speaking on The Hollywood Reporter's Podcast, he expressed his love for both franchises but revealed the challenges of merging them. "I’d love to do a musical someday. I think that would be really fun," Johnson said, hinting at his broader aspirations. "Can we talk about the Muppets really quick? I’m not doing a Muppet. This is not the announcement."
Johnson's main concern lies in preserving the integrity of both properties. "On the internet, the notion of a Knives Out Muppet movie comes up a lot. I wanted to get you guys together here so that I could explain why that’s a bad idea," he laughed. "It’s not a bad idea, but… I love and respect Muppet movies too much. The reality is, if you put Muppets in a Benoit Blanc movie, it would feel totally wrong because they would be getting murdered."
He further elaborated, "The alternative is to just stick Benoit Blanc into a Muppet movie, which admittedly would be very fun, but… would kind of break the reality of what Blanc is." Johnson's comments reflect a deep respect for the storytelling traditions of both lines, recognizing that while a crossover might be entertaining, it could compromise the essence of the characters and their respective worlds.
Despite the improbability of a Knives Out and Muppets crossover, Johnson did share his continued interest in the Muppets themselves. "I would just love to do a regular awesome Muppet movie," he revealed. "I’ll do the Muppet caper or my Muppet musical." This openness suggests that while a direct crossover might not be on the horizon, Johnson is still keen to explore the possibilities within the Muppet universe, potentially leading to exciting projects in the future.
For now, fans can look forward to Johnson's latest work, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, which hits cinemas on November 26 before becoming available on Netflix from December 12. While the crossover may remain a dream for now, the enthusiasm of fans and Johnson's respect for both franchises ensure that the conversation will likely continue, keeping the door open for future possibilities.
