In 2013, the National Stonewall Democratic Federation, originally founded by retired Representative Barney Frank (D-MA) in 1998, closed its Washington office, citing financial difficulties and a lack of dues from local chapters. This organization had been instrumental in uniting Stonewall Democratic clubs across the nation, advocating for LGBTQ+ rights within the Democratic Party. However, the federation went on an indefinite hiatus and left many questioning its future.
Now, in response to the looming challenges posed by an openly anti-LGBTQ+ administration under Donald Trump, the organization has been revitalized under a new banner: the National Federation of Stonewall Democrats. The revival aims to address the pressing concerns facing the LGBTQ+ community, particularly in the political sphere.
With Donald Trump's inauguration on the horizon, the group announced its reformation, led by President Jeremy Comeau. "The challenges facing LGBTQ+ Americans today underscore the need for a bold and unapologetically progressive action," Comeau stated. "We are united in our mission and we are unapologetically committed to that work."
This new federation seeks to amplify the voices of the 19 million LGBTQ+ Americans and drive progress within the Democratic Party and across the nation. Founding organizations include local Stonewall Democratic clubs and LGBTQ+ Democratic Party caucuses from 21 states. Out members of Congress, such as Robert Garcia (D-CA) and Sarah McBride (D-DE), have expressed their support for the group's mission.
Jeremy Comeau has articulated that the federation's priority will be to ensure accountability from Democratic elected officials and candidates regarding their stance and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights. "Our job is to continue to push for the Democrats who are elected to make sure that they’re speaking up," Comeau emphasized. "If they just let the Republicans steamroll these issues through the Congress without providing the words of support for the community … we’re doomed."
The political landscape is particularly challenging, with a Republican-controlled White House and Congress overtly hostile to LGBTQ+ rights. Trump's administration has made clear its intentions to undermine these rights, including plans to eliminate transgender individuals from the military and roll back protections in schools.
Keeping the Democratic Party united in the face of such challenges is crucial. The federation aims to counter narratives that blame support for LGBTQ+ rights for the party's electoral losses. Representative Seth Moulton (D-MA) has been vocal about his criticisms, suggesting the party focuses too much on not offending anyone. However, Jeremy Comeau rejects this notion, indicating a need for a more robust defense of LGBTQ+ rights within the party.
One strategy the federation plans to employ is to hold Democrats accountable, similar to tactics used by the MAGA movement. This includes primarying candidates who are perceived as lacking commitment to LGBTQ+ rights. To support this effort, the group has formed an independent political action committee aimed at recruiting and funding a new generation of out Democratic leaders.
The formation of the National Federation of Stonewall Democrats marks a significant step in the ongoing fight for LGBTQ+ rights. By strengthening political advocacy and ensuring representation, the federation hopes to effect change not only within the Democratic Party but across the nation. As Comeau put it, "Together, we’re going to build on our work to create a Democracy big enough for all of us."
