Rep. Julie Johnson Paves the Way for Defiance
In a historic election, U.S. Rep. Julie Johnson (D-TX) marked a significant milestone by becoming the first openly lesbian woman elected to Congress from the Southern United States. Her victory was a beacon of hope, even as the political climate grew tense with President Donald Trump's re-election.
"It feels like an age has passed since my victory," Johnson, 58, remarked, reflecting on the ever-evolving political landscape. The current administration, under Trump, has sparked numerous controversies, pushing Democrats into a defensive stance. Johnson, however, remains hopeful as the judicial branch continues to challenge and check the executive's power, reinforcing the balance of governance.
As a seasoned lawyer, Johnson uses her expertise on a Democratic-led task force dedicated to contesting Trump's policies in court. "The notion of a president ruling unchecked is being dismantled through legal means," she explained. The task force has initiated over a hundred lawsuits, aiming to uphold democratic principles and prevent authoritarian governance.
We had the opportunity to speak with Rep. Johnson during a brief stop at Dulles International Airport, as she prepared to return to her home district in Dallas.
Strategies of Resistance in Political Arenas
In a discussion about political resistance, Johnson recounted her experiences in Texas, where Democrats famously left the state to halt a controversial voting bill. Although Congress does not offer the same quorum tactics, Johnson emphasized that Democrats are utilizing every available method to voice opposition. "We're constantly engaging with the media, hosting town halls, and coordinating with organizations capable of legal action," she noted.
The representative highlights the importance of communication and legal challenges as crucial tools in their arsenal. "The courts have become a formidable ally, and we're making progress," she added.
Unconventional Acts of Defiance
When asked about an unconventional protest involving screens at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Johnson laughed and acknowledged the creativity behind such acts. "Every form of defiance plays a role. Sometimes, humor is the most effective way to capture public attention," she said, supporting varied approaches to political activism.
Johnson also praised Maine Gov. Janet Mills for standing firm against federal pressure on transgender rights, underscoring the ongoing battle for equality across states. "We need more leaders willing to take legal action to uphold rights," she affirmed.
Concerns Over Marriage Equality
Discussing the potential threat to marriage equality, Johnson expressed concern over the possibility of the Supreme Court reversing its stance on Obergefell v. Hodges. However, she finds solace in the legislative support shown through the Respect for Marriage Act. "Legislative measures highlight Congressional intent to uphold marriage rights," she explained.
Addressing Data Privacy and Security
On the topic of data privacy, Johnson was critical of the DOGE initiative, which she believes compromises national security and personal privacy. "Such actions are dangerously invasive," she warned, emphasizing the importance of maintaining secure and transparent data practices.
Additionally, Johnson addressed parallels drawn between current U.S. politics and ancient Rome, firmly rejecting the idea that democracy is failing. "Democracy thrives through participation and balance. A dictatorial approach is not the solution," she asserted.
Empowering LGBTQ+ Voices
As the first openly LGBTQ+ woman from the South in Congress, Johnson embraces her role as a trailblazer. "It's empowering and humbling to represent a voice for many who feel marginalized," she shared, recognizing the significance of visibility in politics.
Reflecting on the influence of iconic women like Ann Richards and Barbara Jordan, Johnson emphasized the need for more women in leadership roles. "Their legacies inspire continued advocacy for equality and representation," she added.
