An iconic LGBTQ+ venue in Soho, G-A-Y, has been put up for sale. Jeremy Joseph, the owner of the venue, has cited significant changes in the Soho nightlife scene and the financial repercussions stemming from a related venue's temporary closure as reasons for this decision.
Located at 30 Old Compton Street, G-A-Y Bar has been a staple in London’s vibrant LGBTQ+ scene. The property is now listed online with an annual rent of £410,000. Jeremy Joseph, who also owns the prominent nightclub Heaven, expressed his mixed emotions about selling the bar. He took to social media to share his thoughts, calling the decision "tough."
"This is not just a bar to me," Joseph stated. "It has been my home for over 15 years, as I’ve lived above it. However, it’s time for changes," he added. The decision reflects broader shifts within Soho and challenges Joseph has faced with his other venues.
The decision to sell comes after the closure of another legendary venue, G-A-Y Late, in December 2023. Additionally, Heaven nightclub faced a temporary shutdown by the Metropolitan Police due to a reported incident. This closure significantly impacted the finances of G-A-Y Bar, according to Joseph.
The incident involved a bouncer, Morenikeji Adewole, aged 47, who was accused of an attack near Heaven. Adewole has denied the allegations and is currently awaiting trial later this year. The venue has since reopened following a hearing by Westminster Council but operates under stricter conditions.
"When I addressed the Westminster Licensing committee, I emphasized that even a short closure of Heaven could jeopardize G-A-Y Bar financially," Joseph said. He indicated that the financial strain and mental toll of managing these issues have been substantial.
Joseph expressed concerns about the evolving identity of Soho, particularly Old Compton Street. "Soho has lost its vibrancy," he lamented. "Old Compton Street no longer feels like the queer hub it once was." He reminisced about starting G-A-Y with a vision of being part of the gayest streets in the world.
According to Joseph, the current landscape of Old Compton Street is notably different. "Instead of a vibrant LGBTQ+ scene, we see a shift towards restaurants and cafes," he explained. "What was once the heart of LGBTQ+ nightlife now feels different."
Despite the decision to sell, Joseph hopes that G-A-Y Bar can continue as an LGBTQ+ venue, potentially through franchise options. However, he is cautious about the prospect given the changes in the area. "My gut feeling is that it’s challenging to maintain that identity in the current climate," he remarked.
Joseph concluded with mixed feelings about the future. "I’m sad, but there’s also a sense of relief," he admitted. "This decision allows me to find the peace of mind I’ve been seeking." While the sale of G-A-Y Bar marks the end of an era, it also signifies a new chapter for both Joseph and the venue.
As the Soho nightlife scene continues to evolve, the legacy of venues like G-A-Y will undoubtedly influence future developments. The community holds onto the hope that spaces for LGBTQ+ individuals will continue to thrive, adapting to new challenges while preserving the spirit that made them iconic.
In this period of transition, the resilience and adaptability of both venues and patrons will be key to sustaining the vibrant culture that has long been a hallmark of Soho.
