Rutger published: Remembering Lia Smith: A Promising Life Cut Short

Remembering Lia Smith: A Fond Farewell The Middlebury College community finds itself reeling from a painful loss with Lia Smith's tragic passing. At just 21, Lia was a senior, brightening lives through her dedication and passion as a double major in computer science and statistics. Her lively spirit was evident in her involvement with numerous campus groups and activities.

The search and a sorrowful discovery Lia was last seen on campus on October 17. When her father realized she was missing two days later, concern spread quickly. The Vermont State Police Search and Rescue Team, alongside many caring students, joined forces in a thorough search effort. However, on October 23, hopes were shattered when Lia's body was found in a field by The Knoll, Middlebury's organic farm. Her death was ruled a suicide by medical examiners, leaving an aching void in everyone's hearts.

Celebrating Lia's impact and contributions Everyone who crossed paths with Lia knew her as more than just an exceptional student. She was a dynamic partaking in college life. A former member on Middlebury's women's swimming and diving team, she was also involved in numerous clubs. Her enthusiasm stretched from chess and Japanese cultural groups, right through her passionate advocacy work on transgender rights, showcasing her broad interests and commitment.

Community support and heartfelt tributes Ian Baucomo, President at Middlebury College, expressed his profound sadness at Lia's death. "I've spoken with Lia's family, sharing my deepest condolences," he said. "As both a president and a dad, I can't fathom their loss. It's beyond comprehension." Baucomo also expressed gratitude toward both authorities and volunteers who helped in searching. He praised Lia's exceptional character: "I've learned so much about who Lia genuinely was. She hailed from Woodside, California, and attended Sacred Heart Preparatory School. She dove on our team, joined our chess and Japanese clubs, and ardently championed transgender rights. Her academic brilliance enriched us all, and she'll forever be treasured within our Middlebury family. As we walk through this difficult time, let's continue showing kindness and care toward one another and ourselves."

Honoring Lia's legacy Middlebury College plans an event so students and staff can come together in Lia's honor. Though details are still in progress, this gathering will be a chance not just remembering Lia but healing together. On social media, friends and acquaintances have shared cherished memories. One post read: "My daughter was in her senior year when Lia joined as a freshman. I didn't know Lia well personally, yet as a former college diver, I loved watching her compete. Lia was part my daughter's swim family. Without pause, she fondly remembers Lia's wicked sense humor. She kept us laughing." Another remarked, "Lia was a remarkable friend our daughter, an incredible human being. We adored her, and our hearts are shattered. Her family's grief unimaginable." Someone else reflected, "I'm deeply sorry hearing about her loss. I began my own journey at that same campus. She sounds like an amazing person," connecting their past experience with where Lia flourished. Lia's loss echoes throughout Middlebury and beyond, reminding us all how essential it remains reaching out, staying connected, and supporting each other when needed. This tragedy underscores mental health awareness's critical importance alongside continuing support those struggling. We encourage you—whether you knew Lia or wish sharing your thoughts—to join a conversation honoring her memory, staying respectful and supportive at all times. If you or anyone needs help, please reach out. You're not alone; many resources stand ready offering support during these trying times.
