Blue Moon bar and restaurant in Rehoboth Beach: A new chapter begins
The LGBTQ+ community in and around DMV has been buzzing with mixed emotions lately. It's all because Blue Moon, that beloved bar and restaurant in Rehoboth Beach, has hit real estate listings. Since it first opened its doors in 1981, Blue Moon has been more than just a place; it has stood as a vibrant, welcoming haven and holds a special place in LGBTQ+ history. But don't worry too much—the current owners are committed ensuring it stays true as a friendly gathering spot.
Tim Ragan, who co-owns Blue Moon with his lifelong partner Randy Haney, recently spoke about their decision. "We had no idea," Ragan said, sounding a bit surprised by how much interest it has stirred up. They're selling off their real estate separately from Blue Moon itself, hoping this move will attract folks who are eager and ready maintain its welcoming spirit.
What does this sale mean?
Listed by Carrie Lingo, Blue Moon's property includes two buildings on Baltimore Ave. The main one houses a sprawling 6,600-square-foot restaurant with three floors, a basement, and even an apartment on top. Then there's another building with 1,800 square feet across two floors. This real estate package comes with a $4.5 million price tag. As far as how much someone would pay just take over Blue Moon, well, that's still under wraps.
Over two decades, Ragan has shepherded this space, and they're definitely not in a rush sell. "Nothing's happening overnight," he noted. Blue Moon's doors will stay open through holidays and will shine again come February 10, 2026, with a fresh lineup already in progress.
"It's time pass on torch," Ragan mused, mentioning his milestone 70th birthday as a sign that it's time step back a bit. Separating real estate from business was key, he explained, since not everyone could manage both.
Keeping it real with community
Beyond just being a bar and restaurant, Blue Moon stands as a beacon—it's a refuge and a community symbol where LGBTQ+ folks can gather. The idea new owners brings both excitement and a touch worry. Could this lively queer spot get swallowed by redevelopment or a restaurant chain?
For Ragan and Haney, maintaining Blue Moon's legacy as a bastion gay-friendly vibes comes before everything else. "That's priority number one," Ragan stressed. They've had plenty offers and interest, but they're intent on choosing someone who'll honor Blue Moon's past and future.
Local restaurant chains have shown interest, but these owners aren't keen hand over keys anyone who doesn't vibe with Blue Moon's core values. They want folks who get just how special and culturally significant this place really has been.
Blue Moon isn't just a place. It's a powerful reminder how much impact safe, inclusive spaces have on a community. They're places we can be ourselves, find belonging, and share joy. While they seek right buyer, one thing's certain—the spirit Blue Moon will live on, thanks loyal support owners and community.
As Blue Moon's future unfolds, everyone involved remains dedicated keeping it a beacon inclusivity and creativity. With ongoing support from LGBTQ+ community and its allies, Blue Moon will hopefully continue flourishing as vibrant, welcoming, and diverse space, just it has been all these years.
