Douglas Lieble, a writer and co-executive producer on Disney Channel's classic show, *Hannah Montana*, shares his thoughts on how a gay character was depicted in just its first episode. With fans eagerly counting down till March 24th when *Hannah Montana* marks its 20th anniversary, Lieble's reflections offer a look back at both hurdles and achievements in representing LGBTQ+ characters in kids' television.>
While chatting on *Best Of Both Our Worlds* with *Hannah Montana* star Jason Earles and director Shannon Flynn, Lieble set aside some time delve back show kicked off. Earles reminisces about some outlandishly aspects plot—especially idea Miley Cyrus's character, Miley Stewart, could effectively manage dual life as average teen sensation Hannah Montana.>
One specific topic they touched on was Fermine, a character played by Matt Winston, who was a stylist featured only that first episode. Fermine supposedly knew Miley's secret, but Lieble was more concerned with how his character was portrayed.>
Lieble didn't shy away from expressing his regret over how Fermine was depicted, calling his portrayal a little too basic and riddled with stereotypes. "No offense Matt, but that portrayal was pretty cartoon-like and very flat," he admitted. Back then, societal norms made everyone cautious about including a gay character in a children's program.>
"Think back 20 years," Lieble suggested. Fermine's portrayal ended up being criticized relying heavily on stereotypes and exaggerated mannerisms intended be funny, now recognized as glaring mistake. "It was absolutely mistake, and quite frankly, insulting," he shared.>
Lieble compared Fermine another character, Albert Dontzig, Stewart's wealthy neighbor played by Paul and Peter Vogt. Although Dontzig wasn't openly shown as gay, Lieble imagined him so. Unlike Fermine, Dontzig's humor came out more from his finicky attitude instead relying those old gay stereotypes, providing character with more depth. "Dontzig's comedy was in his fussiness, not in being gay," explained Lieble.>
