Rutger published: Reflections from Trans and Non-Binary Authors: Letters to Our Younger Selves

The journey of self-discovery and acceptance is a deeply personal one, particularly for members of the trans and non-binary communities. In a heartwarming collection of letters, 30 authors from diverse backgrounds have come together to write to their younger selves, sharing experiences, wisdom, and hope in Letter To My Little Trans Self. This collection, published by Hotpencil Press, offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of those who have navigated the complexities of gender identity.

A Personal Journey of Reflection

Sabah Choudrey, a notable figure in the trans community and co-founder of Trans Pride Brighton, shared their insights on why participating in this project was personally significant. "I wrote my piece because I wanted to do something for my younger self," they explained. For over a decade, Sabah has worked closely with trans youth, yet found it rare to take time to reflect on their personal journey. "I don’t know why I haven’t, I think I’ve never had the chance or have always overlooked myself because I’m surrounded by the narratives of trans young people and our stories. But actually sitting down with myself and a piece of paper gave me a real moment of fun, love, and happiness that I hadn’t really experienced anywhere else."

Sabah emphasized the joy and validation found in reconnecting with their younger self, recalling the innocence and clarity of understanding their identity. "It was nice to be able to connect with my younger trans self and find so many different moments of fun, goofiness, joy, and hope." They noted how these moments reinforced their sense of self and provided a comforting reminder of the progress they have made.

Resilience Amid Challenges

Another contributor, Eva Echo, a passionate activist and public speaker, wrote her letter in response to the growing anti-trans rhetoric worldwide. With political climates increasingly fraught with negativity, Eva felt a strong need to affirm her personal journey. "With all that’s going on politically, and constantly reacting to negativity, I felt it was important for me to remind myself of my own journey," she shared.

Historically, Eva’s path was marred by a lack of familial support, leading to profound uncertainty. "Growing up, I never really had a supportive or loving family to guide me, which led to so much uncertainty and lack of confidence in who I was," she recounted. Despite these challenges, Eva’s reflections in her letter offered a powerful message to her younger self: to embrace life and the freedom to live authentically.

"I wanted to tell my younger self that it’s not so much what we do, but that we just do it. Let go and feel life, not just following unwritten rules that are imposed on us or getting bogged down with finding answers to questions, which only lead to more questions." Writing this letter proved to be a cathartic exercise for Eva, grounding her in the present and reinforcing the importance of living and thriving regardless of external circumstances.

Empowerment and Hope

This anthology is more than just a series of letters; it is a beacon of hope and empowerment for the trans and non-binary community. It exemplifies the courage and resilience required to navigate a world that can often feel unwelcoming. Each letter offers a unique perspective, yet collectively they underscore common themes of self-love, resilience, and the importance of community.

The writers' willingness to share their vulnerabilities and triumphs serves as an inspiration not only to their younger selves but also to anyone who reads their letters. In a time where visibility and representation are crucial, Letter To My Little Trans Self provides a vital voice for trans and non-binary individuals.

We invite you to reflect on these stories and consider what you might say to your own younger self. How would you inspire them? What advice would you give? Share your thoughts with us, and remember to engage in respectful and supportive discussions.

Join the conversation and be part of a community that values diversity, understanding, and mutual support. Let these letters be a reminder of the strength that comes from embracing who you are, no matter where you are on your journey.
