Rutger published: Reflecting on Manti Te’o: A Football Saga and the LGBTQ+ Intersection

Back in my sophomore year at college, I found myself caught up in a whirlwind when Manti Te'o's story broke. The news that Notre Dame's star linebacker had a girlfriend who never really existed took everyone by surprise. When Deadspin peeled back layers and exposed this hoax, people couldn't stop wondering about Te'o's personal life and his sexuality. The whole thing was surreal.

when a sports hero falls

Did Manti Te'o knowingly become part in this massive deception? That's what everyone was asking. Curiosity ramped up even more when Netflix dropped their 2022 documentary, “Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn't Exist.” In it, Te'o finally opened up about how he got drawn in by Lennay Kekua, a woman who was nothing but a figment spun from lies.

This documentary also introduced us all face-to-face with Naya Tuiasosopo, who created Kekua. Now living as a transgender woman, Tuiasosopo shared why she did it, explaining how it served as a getaway from her own struggles.

Caught in a media storm

When all this hit, Te'o didn't come out looking like a victim. Instead, he became a punch line. Memes and jokes about him being gullible spread like wildfire. This mockery also had serious repercussions; it saw him fall in NFL draft rankings, landing in a less lucrative second-round pick in 2013. It was a blow that not only cost him millions but also seemed like it put a damper on his football career, which lasted a humble eight seasons.

Amidst all this chaos, conversations about Te'o's sexuality became a focal point, but it wasn't handled with much grace. Between Notre Dame's conservative leanings and Te'o's deeply religious Polynesian background, he was under intense scrutiny. Back then, you hardly found any openly gay athletes in male pro sports.

The chance sports missed

Instead tackling how athletes often feel pressured hide who they are, media just pointed fingers at Te'o. The speculation surrounding his sexual orientation turned more accusatory than it became a moment ripe with opportunity. It could've kickstarted a dialogue on inclusivity in athletics.

During an interview that caught everyone's attention, Katie Couric asked Te'o outright, "Are you gay?" His awkward reply, “Far from it. Faaaaaaaaar from it,” showed how much he was hurting. Even sports commentators like Mike Florio discussed whether NFL teams were curious about his orientation, hinting that being gay wasn't welcome.

where we are now

Fast forward a decade, and we're in much better place culturally. Topics like this are approached with more empathy, but back then, media coverage often suggested being gay was bad. That message hit home with many young LGBTQ+ folks, myself included, who were trying just as hard as Te'o was, hoping they'd be accepted in sports circles.
