MEXICO CITY — On July 16, 2018, an event unfolded which many found unsettling. During a press conference in Helsinki, then-President Donald Trump defended Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was a pivotal moment that many, including myself, witnessed live on television. I was on assignment in Mexico City at the time, and what transpired compelled me to write about the shifting perception of the United States' commitment to human rights across the globe.
Now, 15 days after Trump has returned to the White House, I find myself in Mexico City once more. The current administration seems determined to distance itself from the longstanding principles of human rights and basic decency, both internationally and domestically.
Trump’s executive orders have had profound implications, particularly for the LGBTQ community worldwide. Many LGBTQ individuals rely on U.S. foreign aid for survival, aid that has been jeopardized by these new directives. Moreover, within the United States, policies have systematically overlooked the existence and rights of transgender, nonbinary, and intersex individuals. Beyond domestic borders, Trump has strained relationships with key allies, including Mexico and Canada, through aggressive tariff threats and incendiary rhetoric.
The expectation that Trump might respond with empathy and decency to tragedies was dashed last week when a midair collision near Reagan National Airport occurred. Instead of offering condolences or support, Trump speculated, without evidence, that diversity initiatives from previous administrations could be to blame.
Upon reading this, I was in a coffee shop in Tijuana, feeling both disbelief and frustration. My immediate reaction was far from diplomatic, as I muttered my disapproval aloud. Such moments highlight a perceived departure from the ideals once associated with American leadership and decency.
Previously, I wrote about the concept of American exceptionalism; a belief, despite its imperfections, that the United States is a beacon of opportunity where individuals can aspire toward a better life for themselves and their families. Yet, it appears that the current administration has distanced itself from these core values.
Trump's foreign and domestic policies have not only altered perceptions of America but have also posed challenges on a global scale. By prioritizing certain agendas over fundamental human rights and decency, the administration has altered the U.S.'s role on the world stage.
It is regrettable that history seems to be repeating itself. The ideals of human dignity and respect, which have been central to the U.S.'s identity and influence, are being overshadowed by actions that suggest otherwise. The repercussions of these decisions, both seen and unseen, have a lasting impact on the global community.
As someone who has traveled extensively and witnessed both the positive and negative aspects of American influence, it is disheartening to see a departure from values that promote inclusivity and support for marginalized communities. The international community looks to the U.S. for leadership, and the recent trajectory raises concerns about future global cooperation on important issues like human rights, climate change, and international peace.
In conclusion, the direction in which the U.S. has moved under Trump raises important questions about the nation's future role in the world. It is critical for individuals and leaders to reflect on these developments and consider how they align with the values they wish to uphold.
