Rutger published: Rebecca Sugar's Fight for Representation in 'Steven Universe'

Rebecca Sugar, the visionary behind the acclaimed animated series "Steven Universe," has opened up about the challenges she faced in bringing queer representation to the small screen. Her candid revelations on TikTok highlight the struggles and triumphs of including nonbinary characters in a mainstream children's show.

Sugar, who identifies as bisexual and uses both she/her and they/them pronouns, shared that she had to fight to get Cartoon Network to embrace the queer nature of two beloved characters, Ruby and Sapphire. These characters, alien superheroes who merge to form Garnet, have played a pivotal role in both the storyline and cultural impact of "Steven Universe."

Inspiration Behind the Characters

The inspiration for Garnet, as Sugar explains, is deeply personal. The character is a reflection of her relationship with Ian Jones-Quartey, the series' supervising director, whom Sugar married in 2019. "Ruby and Sapphire are us," Sugar shared, indicating that the characters represent them both. She further elaborated that during the show’s early conceptual stages in 2011 and 2012, it was clear they wouldn’t be permitted to display Ruby and Sapphire's romantic relationship openly. This led to the creative decision to introduce Garnet as a single character, who audiences would come to love.

Challenges and Resistance

Garnet made her first appearance in the pilot episode of "Steven Universe" when it aired on Cartoon Network in 2013. However, it wasn't until the season one finale in 2014 that Ruby and Sapphire were introduced in their full glory. Sugar and Jones-Quartey strategically kept these characters "hidden" from the network until this critical juncture.

Predictably, Sugar faced immediate pushback with the note that "these characters cannot be in a romantic relationship." Sugar stood her ground, stating, "They are, they sing a song about it, they’re in love, the song has already been recorded; we can’t take it out." This steadfastness was rooted in Sugar's belief that the love story was essential to the show's narrative.

Breaking Through

Despite the initial resistance, Cartoon Network eventually permitted Ruby and Sapphire's love to shine in the episode that aired in March 2015. However, this was just the beginning of what Sugar described as "a big uphill battle" for every subsequent appearance of the couple. Sugar expressed her determination to continue this fight, stating, "I would compromise on other things, but I would not compromise on Ruby and Sapphire."

The Legacy of 'Steven Universe'

The groundbreaking series concluded in early 2019, leaving behind a legacy of inclusion and representation that has been celebrated by audiences and critics alike. "Steven Universe" not only showcased queer, genderqueer, and intersex characters but also became a beacon of diversity in animation, earning accolades such as Emmy, Peabody, and GLAAD Media Awards.

Furthermore, "Steven Universe" is recognized as the first Cartoon Network show created by a woman. However, Sugar, who has since clarified that she does not identify strictly as a woman, has transformed this acknowledgment into a broader conversation about gender identity and representation.

As "Steven Universe" continues to inspire new generations, Sugar's dedication to authentic storytelling and representation remains a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusivity in media. Her journey with "Steven Universe" is not just a personal triumph but a cultural milestone that underscores the necessity of queer narratives in all forms of storytelling.
