Parvati Shallow, known by many from her standout moments on reality TV, takes us on a deeply personal ride in her latest memoir, "Nice Girls Don't Win: How I Burned It All Down To Claim My Power." With a candor that's both refreshing and intense, she delves deep, sharing stories about navigating emotional affairs, exploring her queer identity, and facing those internal struggles we all know too well.
Recalling some truly transformative times in her life, Shallow opens up about openly embracing her queer identity in December 2023. This huge personal step was warmly celebrated by her partner, comedian Mae Martin, who marked New Year's Eve with a sweet post about their relationship. But, as life often goes, Shallow later shared that things between them were "up in air," highlighting just how messy and unpredictable love and personal growth can be.
Before stepping fully onto her path, Shallow was married. She and fellow Survivor contestant John Fincher tied knots from 2018 until 2021, welcoming their daughter in 2018. After their divorce, in those moments we often dread but find necessary, she found herself with enough clarity and space from life's noise, leading her hand back towards writing her memoir.
Sitting down with Entertainment Weekly, Shallow admitted that writing this memoir was probably "the hardest thing I've ever done." Even with all those grueling days battling it out on Survivor, taking a hard look at her own life's twists and turns demanded a new kind and depth reflection. "There were stretches when I didn't have my daughter," she explained, "and I got this rare chance—some days here, five days there—to just slow down, look around and think, ‘Whoa, how did I end up this off track? How did I get here?'"
Her memoir doesn't just tell a story; it's her journey towards growth and self-acceptance. Shallow stresses embracing one's true self, showing compassion, and encouraging others with similar struggles. "I didn't write it trying be impressive or anything," she admits. "I included all these embarrassing stories, parts where I don't look great, because I want people see it and feel like it's okay—to accept themselves too."
Shallow might be known from reality TV, but those experiences shaped her public persona more than you'd think. Beyond her days on Survivor, she recently jumped onto season two The Traitors. Why? "Honestly, The Traitors just sounded cool. Alan Cumming was hosting, and I was like, Yes! I'm so glad I did it because it opened doors connecting different fan bases from another network," she said.
This adventure led her even further, performing in drag shows around country bring people together. "Being part these drag shows, mixing fans Traitors and Survivor, it feels like one massive celebration, and just so much fun," she laughed. "The Traitors definitely brought a lot joy, and I'm thankful I took part."
"Nice Girls Don't Win: How I Burned It All Down To Claim My Power" isn't just about telling her story; it celebrates Shallow's personal wins and her journey towards finding her strength. It offers readers a look inside life a woman who embraced her queerness, faced her past, and emerged stronger.
