Rutger published: Ranking All 17 Seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race US: From Budget Beginnings to Fabulous Finishes

Since its debut, RuPaul’s Drag Race has become a cultural phenomenon, expanding globally with seasons in various countries, including Mexico, Australia, and the Philippines. Despite its global reach, the original US version remains the flagship series, recently concluding its seventeenth season. In celebration, we’ve ranked all 17 seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race US from worst to best. Racers, start your engines!

17. Season 1 (2009)

The inaugural season, often dubbed ‘The Lost Season,’ was a modest beginning for RuPaul’s Drag Race. With its low budget, blurred visuals from the infamous "vaseline filter," and a softer RuPaul, the season felt like a trial run. Despite its humble production, it birthed legends like Ongina and Bebe Zahara Benet, showcasing profound moments beyond just drag.

16. Season 13 (2021)

Season 13 introduced a stellar cast and a historic first with trans representation from GottMik. While packed with drama, the “Porkchop Lounge” twist and prolonged eliminations weakened its impact. Filmed during the pandemic, it lacked live elements, overshadowed by the simultaneous airing of Drag Race UK’s acclaimed season two.

15. Season 14 (2022)

With a strong and diverse cast, season 14 promised much but faced several hiccups. Lengthy episodes with minimal eliminations, a lackluster Snatch Game, and an anticlimactic "it’s chocolate" twist made the season feel overstretched. Despite this, winners like Willow Pill shone brightly, leaving a lasting impression.

14. Season 10 (2018)

Season 10 is memorable for Vanessa Vanjie Mateo’s viral "Miss Vanjie" exit, which became a cultural moment. However, despite strong lip-syncs and standout challenges, the season struggled to maintain momentum after its viral start, with a finale that left audiences wanting more.

13. Season 11 (2019)

Though critiqued by fans, season 11 delivered a unique winner in Yvie Oddly and memorable drama-driven episodes. Despite a large cast, which led to some queens fading into the background, it featured iconic lip-syncs and unforgettable runway moments.

12. Season 15 (2023)

Season 15 marked a return to form, though initially hindered by shorter episodes after moving to MTV. Once extended, the season showcased a diverse and talented cast, highlighted by Sasha Colby’s win. Standout performances, like Anetra’s "Walk That F*****g Duck," solidified its place as a fan favorite.

11. Season 2 (2010)

Season two found its footing with heightened drama and improved production. Featuring confrontational personalities and iconic moments like the first Snatch Game, it set the standard for future seasons. Despite budget limitations, it remains a fan favorite for its raw energy.

10. Season 17 (2025)

Season 17 boasted a well-rounded cast and high-stakes eliminations. Despite some criticized twists, the season delivered engaging challenges and memorable moments. The diversity in drag styles and personalities made it a standout, proving that Drag Race continues to evolve.

9. Season 8 (2016)

With a concise format, season eight focused on the essentials: talent, creativity, and personality. Bob The Drag Queen’s dominance and the strong presence of queens like Kim Chi and Naomi Smalls made this season a refreshing watch.

8. Season 7 (2015)

Though initially underrated, season seven introduced iconic figures like Trixie Mattel and Katya, who became major pop culture figures. The season emphasized high fashion and humor, setting new standards for Drag Race.

7. Season 16 (2024)

Season 16 brought new life to the series with a dynamic and diverse cast. Memorable for its drama and unique challenges, it showcased a variety of drag styles and personalities, delivering one of the most entertaining lineups in recent years.

6. Season 4 (2012)

Known for its intense rivalries, season four introduced viewers to Sharon Needles’ groundbreaking aesthetic. Drama-filled episodes, iconic lip-syncs, and legendary queens like Latrice Royale defined this season, making it unforgettable.

5. Season 12 (2020)

Despite challenges posed by the pandemic and controversy, season 12 excelled with a strong cast. Jaida Essence Hall, Gigi Goode, and Crystal Methyd delivered standout performances, with challenges like the Madonna Rusical becoming instant classics.

4. Season 3 (2011)

Season three featured a talented top three and unforgettable moments, such as "Drag is not a contact sport!" and multiple design challenges. Its unique challenges and memorable queens paved the way for future seasons.

3. Season 9 (2017)

Season nine’s top four – Sasha Velour, Shea Couleé, Trinity The Tuck, and Peppermint – remain legendary. With a Lady Gaga appearance, iconic runway looks, and the unforgettable rose petal lip-sync, it was a season of high drama and artistry.

2. Season 6 (2014)

With a near-perfect cast, season six delivered diverse challenges and memorable moments. Bianca Del Rio’s humor, Courtney Act’s runway excellence, and BenDeLaCreme’s comedy made for a well-rounded season that set a high bar for Drag Race.

1. Season 5 (2013)

Season five is the epitome of Drag Race excellence. Iconic moments, dramatic rivalries, and unforgettable quotes made it a cultural milestone. From hilarious conflicts to groundbreaking performances, it remains the gold standard for reality TV.
