Rachel Maddow, the well-known host from MSNBC, recently highlighted a concerning trend regarding President Donald Trump's current standing with the American populace. Despite the typically favorable "honeymoon" period that most presidents experience at the beginning of their terms, Trump is facing unusually high disapproval ratings, according to a series of recent polls.
In a new CNN poll, only 47% of Americans approve of Trump's performance in office, while 52% disapprove, giving him a net disapproval rating of 5%. The Pew Research Center's latest survey echoes these sentiments with a net disapproval of 4%. Similarly, a Reuters poll spots Trump with a disapproval rating of 7%, and the Washington Post's results are even more pronounced, indicating an 8% disapproval rating.
Rachel Maddow emphasized the historical significance of these numbers by stating, "All of this is absolutely historically unprecedented. No president has ever come out of the gate with numbers like this, ever before."
One of the driving factors behind Trump's low approval ratings is a perception of overreach in his presidential authority. A YouGov poll conducted on February 19 revealed that 41% of participants viewed Trump as acting like a "dictator." Additionally, in the CNN poll, 52% of Americans expressed that they believe Trump has "gone too far" with his usage of presidential power, whereas only 8% felt he "hasn’t gone far enough."
The conversation surrounding Trump's handling of economic issues also plays a significant role. Despite frequent campaign promises to address economic concerns, his approach has left many Americans dissatisfied. According to the Reuters poll, only 32% of respondents approved of his management of inflation, and a substantial 54% opposed the new tariffs on imported goods he has implemented.
Rachel Maddow pointed out that the drop in popularity has occurred in a very short time, essentially since his inauguration. She underscored, "What the data shows is that almost every single thing he has done is soundly and clearly and, in some cases, wildly unpopular with the American people."
Maddow referred to a Quinnipiac poll that found more dissatisfaction than approval regarding Trump's handling of foreign policy, trade strategies, federal workforce measures, and critical international conflicts such as the invasion of Ukraine and the Israel-Hamas War. Economic management continues to be a weak point, further eroding confidence among the electorate.
