Rutger published: Rachel Maddow Discusses Trump's Unprecedented Low Approval Ratings

Renowned MSNBC anchor Rachel Maddow has highlighted a series of polls that indicate former President Donald Trump is facing historically low approval ratings, despite normally enjoying what is traditionally considered a "honeymoon" period during his second term. These recent poll results reveal a significant drop in popularity, which Maddow describes as "historically unprecedented."

Polls Indicate Falling Approval Ratings

According to Maddow, a CNN poll shows that only 47% of Americans approve of Trump’s actions so far in office, while 52% disapprove, resulting in a net disapproval rating of 5%. A separate survey from the Pew Research Center presents a similar picture, with a net disapproval of 4%. Reuters has reported an even higher disapproval rating of 7%, and the Washington Post’s latest figures place Trump’s disapproval rating at 8%.

Rachel Maddow emphasized the unprecedented nature of these numbers, noting, "No president has ever come out of the gate with numbers like this, ever before." Trump's current standing contrasts sharply with the traditional early-term approval boost many presidents experience.

Factors Contributing to Unpopularity

One major factor contributing to Trump's low approval ratings is the perception that he is overstepping his presidential authority. A YouGov poll conducted in mid-February found that 41% of respondents view Trump as behaving like a "dictator." Furthermore, the CNN poll highlighted earlier reveals that 52% of Americans feel Trump has "gone too far" in his use of presidential power, while a mere 8% believe he has "not gone far enough."

Economic issues also play a significant role in Trump's declining popularity. In the Reuters poll, only 32% of participants approved of Trump's handling of inflation, an issue he frequently addressed during his campaign but has not prioritized since taking office. Moreover, 54% of respondents expressed opposition to new tariffs on imported goods, signaling discontent with Trump's trade policies.

Widespread Disapproval Across Policies

Maddow noted that Trump's popularity has waned considerably just in the past month, coinciding with his recent inauguration. She underscored the breadth of discontent, citing a Quinnipiac poll that revealed more disapproval than approval of Trump’s handling of various key policy areas, including foreign policy, trade policy, federal workforce measures, the invasion of Ukraine, the Israel-Hamas War, and the economy.

"What the data shows is that almost every single thing he has done is soundly and clearly, and in some cases, wildly unpopular with the American people," Maddow concluded.
