Rutger published: R&B Artist August Alsina Addresses Viral TikTok with Close Friend Zu

New Orleans-born hip hop and R&B artist August Alsina has recently addressed rumors regarding his relationship with his close friend Zu, following a viral TikTok video that caused a stir on social media.

Alsina, who gained significant popularity after releasing his first mixtape "The Product" in 2012, has worked with notable artists such as Lil Wayne and Chris Brown over the years. His latest album, "MySelf," dropped in 2023, showcasing his evolving musical journey.

On January 1st, the search term "is August Alsina gay" began to trend both on Google and social media platforms. The curiosity was sparked by a TikTok video posted by Alsina's friend Zu, which quickly gained traction. The video, uploaded to the account @OneLookZu, depicted Zu in a car with Alsina, with a playful caption reading, "I'm going to climb this (n-word) as soon as we get in the crib." The suggestive nature of the post led to extensive speculation about the nature of their relationship.

The TikTok clip garnered over two million views and nearly 9000 comments, with fans and followers eager to weigh in on the dynamic between the two friends. Zu had previously caught the public's attention in 2021, appearing alongside Alsina in VH1's reality TV series "The Surreal Life." During the show, Alsina expressed his admiration for Zu, emphasizing a love that "defies all the constructs," which further fueled rumors about their relationship.

Despite the speculation, August Alsina has firmly denied the claims, asserting that the TikTok video was simply Zu's way of "trolling" the audience. Alsina took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to respond to inquiries regarding his sexual orientation and relationship status. He humorously remarked, "Aht! Don’t do detttt.. Erybody else [already] be trollin’… so let that man troll in peace!"

He encouraged his followers to focus on the broader message for 2025, stating, "If somebody is gonna support you, they’re gonna support you. If they’re not, they’re not. No ideation or perceived condition is going to either alter somebody’s investment or lack thereof. In other words, people who enjoy low-hanging fruit, just enjoy low-hanging fruit, and for that, there’s trolling."

While Alsina's clarification was clear, the playful interaction between him and Zu did not go unnoticed by fans, many of whom responded positively to the video. Comments ranged from the hopeful "Y’all sure y’all don’t need a third?" to the enthusiastic "CAN WE WATCH?" One admirer simply stated, "Y’all look so cute together."

Alsina is not alone in facing public speculation about his sexuality. In November 2024, fellow artist NLE Choppa openly confirmed his heterosexuality after months of rumors, which had initially been fueled by his vocal support for the LGBTQ+ community. Speaking candidly on Yung Miami's show "Caresha Please," NLE Choppa expressed his appreciation for queer men, while clarifying that he is only romantically interested in women.

The phenomenon of public figures facing scrutiny over their personal lives is not new, especially within the hip hop and R&B scenes. Artists often find themselves in the spotlight, not only for their artistic contributions but also for their personal affiliations and statements.

Despite the occasional controversy, this ongoing dialogue could be seen as part of a broader cultural shift towards openness and acceptance within the music industry and beyond. As artists like August Alsina and NLE Choppa continue to navigate these conversations, they contribute to an evolving narrative about identity, relationships, and the public's fascination with celebrity life.

For now, August Alsina seems content to let Zu have his fun, indicating that the friendship they share is strong enough to withstand the playful speculation. As his music career continues to flourish, fans continue to support him for both his artistic talent and his refreshingly candid approach to handling the buzz surrounding his personal life.
