Lara Raj, a talented queer Tamil American singer and a vibrant part memberof KatSe, has taken center stage with her first-ever MTV VMA win. Her incredible achievement signals her rise as a new music sensation, fulfilling a dream that's been brewing since her early days in music.
Raj's musical adventure kicked off after her family moved from India when she was a child. Her songs are a vibrant tapestry woven from her multicultural experiences, drawing influences from places like Switzerland, Ghana, and Cuba. "Representation, especially from southern India, has always been my dream," she told Vogue India. "I hope our community feels empowered and seen."
Music was in Raj's blood from a young age, as she and her sister Rhea played around with music production in their bedroom. By her early teens, she was already sharing her renditions on social media, tackling Destiny's Child's "Emotion" and Rihanna's "Love on a Brain," and quickly gaining fans eager for more.
At 14, Raj came out bravely, first telling her family and friends before taking it public in a Weverse Live stream this year. Her playful self-description as "half a fruitcake" struck a chord with fans worldwide, giving others courage and empowering them.
2023 was a game-changer. When The Debut: Dream Academy kicked off, hunting talent alongside K-pop's HYBE and Geffen Records, Raj's online presence grabbed their attention. Competing against 120,000 hopefuls, her talent secured her a place in KatSe, sealing her spot in this promising girl group.
Just before KatSe was officially named, Raj experienced a personal loss—her grandmother passed away. But her grandmother's gift, a cat's eye crystal, became a symbol. "When they named us KatSe, it felt meant to be," Lara said, reflecting on that poignant moment.
Since their debut in 2024, KatSe hasn't slowed down, dominating charts and touring globally. Their second EP, "Beautiful Chaos," made waves, reaching number 4 on Billboard 200 in June 2025.
The sheer joy in Raj's voice when she exclaimed, "We won a f**king VMA," says it all. Her journey resonates with anyone who values authenticity, perseverance, and self-expression.
Lara stands tall, a beacon shining bright not just as an artist, but as a symbol in LGBTQ+ communities everywhere, proving how powerful representation and being true can be.
