Introduction
Sia, the enigmatic voice behind hits like "Cheap Thrills" and "Chandelier," has had a transformative journey both personally and artistically. Recently, the Australian singer-songwriter filed for divorce from her husband, Dan Bernad, marking another chapter in her life filled with change and resilience. This decision comes less than a year after the couple welcomed their first child together, a baby boy named Somersault Wonder Bernad.
The union between Sia, born Sia Kate Isobelle Furler, and Dan Bernad was relatively private, with a secret wedding taking place in December 2022. The couple later celebrated their love with a formal ceremony in the picturesque Portofino, Italy, in May 2023. However, court documents now reveal that Sia filed for divorce on March 18, citing irreconcilable differences. While the legal proceedings are underway, Sia has requested legal and physical custody of their son, though she remains open to Bernad having visitation rights.
Sia's decision to end her marriage reflects her unwavering commitment to her personal truth and well-being, a theme that has been prevalent throughout her career and personal life. Notably, she has also indicated through the documents that she does not wish for Bernad to receive spousal support, underscoring her desire for independence.
The arrival of Somersault Wonder Bernad is a significant milestone for Sia, who has expressed her longing to become a mother for much of her life. In addition to Somersault, Sia is a mother to two other children, whom she adopted in 2019 when they were 18 years old. Her journey into motherhood began after watching the HBO documentary Foster, which profoundly impacted her perspective and inspired her to adopt.
Since then, Sia has embraced her role as a mother and even a grandmother, as one of her sons welcomed twins in 2020. Despite the challenges that come with adoption and raising older children, especially during tumultuous times like the Covid-19 pandemic, Sia has remained steadfast in her support and love for her family. "They are both finding it pretty difficult, one more so than the other," she shared in an interview, reflecting on the struggles her children faced during lockdown. "But they’re both doing things that are really good for them right now, that are really helpful. They’re really doing a lot of educational stuff that’s good for them," she added.
Sia's current divorce is not the first time she has had to navigate the complexities of ending a marriage. She was previously married to filmmaker Erik Anders Lang, whom she wed in 2014. The couple pursued in-vitro fertilization treatments in the hopes of starting a family together, but their dreams were cut short when they divorced in 2016. "Eventually, we did get embryos," Sia revealed, "but then we also got a divorce, so I wasn’t able to use them."
The dissolution of her marriage with Lang was a profoundly difficult period for Sia, triggering a deep depression. "I got divorced and that really threw me for a loop," she confided during an interview. "That one was such a dark time that I was in bed for three years, really really severely depressed, and so I couldn’t really do anything for that period of time."
A prominent figure in the LGBTQ+ community, Sia identifies as queer and has been open about her experiences and relationships with both men and women. She first came out in 2013, and since then, she has used her platform to advocate for inclusivity and acceptance.
Through her music and public life, Sia exemplifies the courage to embrace one's true identity and the strength to overcome personal adversities. Her story is one of resilience, adaptability, and unwavering authenticity. As she navigates this new chapter of her life, she remains an inspirational figure to many, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community.
