Queer Singer Sia and Her Personal Journey: Divorce and Family
Sia, the talented and enigmatic artist known for hits like "Cheap Thrills" and "Chandelier," has had a year full of personal developments and challenges. Recently, the nine-time Grammy-nominated Australian singer-songwriter, Sia Kate Isobelle Furler, has filed for divorce from her husband, Dan Bernad, citing irreconcilable differences. This news comes less than a year after she welcomed their child, Somersault Wonder Bernad, into the world.
Sia and Dan Bernad had a whirlwind romance and tied the knot in a secret ceremony in December 2022. The couple later celebrated their union with a formal wedding ceremony in the picturesque setting of Portofino, Italy, in May 2023. Despite the romantic beginnings, court documents reveal that Sia filed for divorce on March 18, 2024. She has requested both legal and physical custody of their child but is open to Bernad having visitation rights. Additionally, she has requested that Bernad not receive any spousal support.
Along with the arrival of Somersault, Sia is also a mother to two other children, whom she adopted in 2019. At the time of their adoption, both children were 18 years old and were aging out of foster care. Sia has shared her experiences of motherhood, especially during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic. She spoke candidly about the difficulties her children faced during lockdowns and how they have been focusing on educational pursuits to better themselves.
Sia has long desired to become a mother. In an interview with InStyle in 2020, she expressed that motherhood was a lifelong dream. Her journey to parenthood included attempts at in-vitro fertilization with her first husband, Erik Anders Lang. Although they successfully created embryos, their subsequent divorce in 2016 meant Sia did not use them for conception.
The end of her marriage to Lang was a difficult period for Sia. She opened up about the severe depression she experienced, which kept her bedridden for nearly three years. In a conversation on Zane Lowe’s Apple Music Beats 1 podcast, Sia described the profound impact her divorce had on her mental health.
Publicly identifying as queer since 2013, Sia has been open about her sexuality and her experiences in both heterosexual and same-sex relationships. Her openness and honesty have been a source of inspiration for many in the LGBTQ+ community.
Through all her personal and professional ups and downs, Sia remains a beloved figure, admired not just for her music, but also for her resilience and authenticity. Her journey through motherhood, relationships, and self-discovery continues to resonate with fans around the world.
