Queer Eye Stars Discuss Karamo Brown's Absence Amidst Tensions

The beloved culture expert from Netflix's hit show Queer Eye, Karamo Brown, recently stirred up conversation after pulling out of several promotional interviews for the show's tenth season. Brown cited years of "mental and emotional abuse" as the reason for his absence, leading to a public discussion about his decision.

In a recent live interview on CBS Mornings with Gayle King, Brown's fellow Queer Eye cast members—Jonathan Van Ness, Tan France, Antoni Porowski, and Jeremiah Brent—were asked to address the situation. King informed viewers that Brown had opted not to participate in the interview less than an hour before it was scheduled to begin.

King read a statement from Brown, which emphasized the importance of mental health and self-care: "I hope everyone remembers the main theme I have tried to teach them over the past decade, which is to focus on and to protect their mental health/peace from people or a world who seek to destroy it, which is why I can't be there today."

Brown's assistant further elaborated on his concerns, noting that he was "worried about being bullied" if he appeared alongside his castmates. During a separate interview on Today with Jenna Hager and Sheinelle Jones, Jones explained that Brown's assistant had passed on a message from Brown’s therapist advising him to avoid situations that could compromise his mental peace.

On Today, a pre-recorded message from Brown was played in which he reaffirmed his decision to prioritize his well-being. "Just like the themes of this season, I'm modelling what I believe is most important, which I want to remind you all. Love yourselves and protect yourselves; that's why I'm here at home, and not there," he explained.

When asked to respond to Brown's absence, culinary expert Antoni Porowski described his surprise at the situation: "To say I was surprised is a fair understatement. Our Queer Eye family, we've been doing this for almost a decade, which is pretty wild to believe, and families are complicated and we're definitely not excluded from that."

Porowski acknowledged that while there might be internal tensions, the goal of the interview was to highlight the positive impact of the show and its "incredible heroes" from over the years.

Jeremiah Brent, who joined the cast as the interiors and design expert in season nine, expressed his gratitude for the positive experiences he's had with the show: "My experience in this group has been transformative. To see the way that they move through the world; the way that they have taught me so much about life and friendship and love. I have felt safe and supported by the people up here."

He emphasized the show's mission to "highlight the best of humanity" and stressed the importance of the show's message in today's world.

Jonathan Van Ness, the grooming expert, reflected on the valuable lessons learned from Brown: "He has taught people to centre what they need, and I'm actually really proud of him. Center what you need. Do the things you need to do to take care of you."
