Rutger published: Pursuing Joy in a Tumultuous World: A Nonbinary Journalist's Journey

If you’ve ever been captivated by the sight of a rainbow emerging after a fierce storm, then you will deeply appreciate the journey captured in “Pursuing Joy in a Tumultuous World.” This narrative offers an unfiltered look at the lives of transgender and nonbinary youth who are striving to live authentically across the United States.

"The more we can remind the world that these kids are just kids — simply people — the better off we all will be," says Nico Lang, an acclaimed journalist dedicated to sharing these stories.

Recently recognized by The Association of LGBTQ Journalists for their impactful work, Lang, who identifies as nonbinary, has spent nearly a year on a tour following the release of their much-acclaimed book. The book, which achieved the honor of being a 2025 Stonewall Book Award nominee, is now available in paperback.

"In just a few days, it will mark a full year on the road with only brief intermissions," Lang shares. "I was fortunate to have nine days at home with my husband, which felt all too fleeting. I’ve already made 110 stops across 39 states and the District of Columbia, and I aim to reach all corners of this nation. Yet, I can't anticipate when this journey will conclude."

Lang's odyssey began with immersing themselves in the lives of eight diverse families across the country. This endeavor involved witnessing both struggles and triumphs firsthand — a journey that tested not only financial resilience but emotional fortitude as well.

"It was a path of living on lean resources, being resourceful," Lang reflects. "The emotional labor involved in being present with families facing significant challenges was immense. It wasn't just my struggle, but a shared experience."

Those who welcomed Lang into their lives often remarked on the visible toll the project took on them.

"Time and again, families expressed how much I had sacrificed for this project. It wasn't an easy path for any of us," Lang admits.

Many might question the purpose of such an arduous journey, particularly when recent surveys, like one from Gallup, suggest a prevailing societal belief that gender transition is "morally wrong." In these turbulent times, especially for families with transgender children, the stakes are undeniably high.

"A civil rights attorney friend of mine reminded me that the struggle for LGBTQ+ rights was fraught with setbacks long before any victories were won," Lang recalls. "The narrative slowly shifted, and now, understanding that tides can change, we must persist in our fight. This book is a testament to that struggle."

Lang’s book, "Pursuing Joy in a Tumultuous World: The Survival and Resilience of Trans Youth," aims to counteract the negative narratives surrounding gender affirmation and inclusion, focusing instead on shared human experiences.

"This book centers on resilience and survival," Lang explains. "But it’s also a celebration of these young people’s humanity."

Each chapter introduces readers to a new family or individual, weaving their stories of everyday life. Among them are Augie and Jack, homeless siblings in Pensacola, FL, and their mother.

"Homelessness is intrinsically linked to the trans experience," Lang notes.

Other stories include Wyatt from Sioux Falls, SD; Rhydian in Birmingham, AL; Mykah in Charleston, WV; Ruby in Houston; Clint in Chicago; and Kylie in Torrance, CA.

"This book ultimately celebrates the humanity of these kids," Lang emphasizes. "It’s not always about their identity as trans individuals. Sometimes it’s just us musing philosophically. That universal aspect breaks barriers and underscores why their stories matter."

Amidst a backdrop of negative media portrayals of transgender individuals, Lang desires their work to be a beacon of positivity.

"My hope is that this book brings optimism and comfort, offering joy in challenging times," Lang shares. "Personally, I struggle with maintaining hope. I often find myself yearning to regain that sense of hope."

After a brief pause to reconnect with family, Lang plans to resume their journey, promoting their book into the next year and beyond.

"I imagine continuing this journey through 2028, through the next major election," Lang reveals. "I feel a responsibility to use my platform to contribute to positive change and I cannot bear the thought of not doing enough."

Reflecting on the project, Lang reveals the inspiration behind the book’s title, borrowed from an evocative song. It’s clear that they poured their heart into its 304 pages.

"In our journalism, we connect on levels beyond what is typical," Lang asserts.

Dedicated to "lost souls" and advocates like Terri Bruce, Henry Berg-Brousseau, Nex Benedict, and Acey Morrison, Lang’s book is both a tribute and a declaration.

"This book is proof of our existence," Lang declares. "Trans people have always been here, and we will continue to be. Despite efforts to erase us, our presence endures."
